In 1846. a dam was built to power saw-mills and the flooding created Lake Horicon. The lake supported fishing, logging, and general pleasure boating, but the owners of the dam were ultimately fined because the lake would cause flooding every year and damage surrounding farm lands. The dam was removed in 1869.
