Description
Enter the dredgeman. The value of the marsh as a wetland was deemed zero, and the decision was made in 1910 to drain it and sell it in parcels as farmland. Massive campaigns pre-sold the land as ideal for onion farming, and dredges went to work scouring massive channels through the heart of the marsh. As the marsh drained, the peat soil dried out, and fires started all across the marsh. Peat fires smoldered for years, and the entire basin became a smoky wasteland, with no agricultural value at all.Related content
