As the lake drained, the marsh returned and attracted huge numbers of ducks and other game birds, and of course, hunters. Over-hunting on the part of the elite hunting clubs, as well as market hunters who sent ducks by the barrelful to Chicago, Milwaukee and beyond, resulted in the decimation of the bird populations. The extinction of the passenger pigeon occurred around this time, and many others were pushed to the brink.
