, it is known that a lot of hyena deviants are walking around there, waiting the good occasion to scrap your art and all the stuff, so disabling comments can spare you a lot of inconveniences. 
Maybe I should disable comments on this stamp....

, c'est un secret pour personne que certaines personnes n'attendent qu'une occasion pour venir deverser leur fiel sur vos deviations, desactiver les commentaires vous epargne certainement beaucoup de desagrements. Peut-etre que je devrais moi aussi desactiver les commentaires sur ce stamp.....

Hehe, yeah, well I prefere comments myself. I feelif it is something people are likely to bash, go ahead and disable comments. The reason why I don't disable comments on my art is because I like people to comment on my work, good bad or otherwise.
I guess it's really up to the individual to make the choice really. On the note of sparing inconveniences, we learn from our mistakes and differences. I feel if someone doesn't ike something and is going to bash it, the bad is really on them because they couldn't resist an oppertunity to make a fool out of themself by posting on something they don't even approve of in the first place.
Besides, like what you said, it does impair and restrain the freedom of speech that we need to keep flexable. To add, just because someone disables comments doesn't mean that person cannot still give them a note about how they feel on said deviation.
Errr...the whole hyena deviants looking for people to bash...oh great...here comes paranoia...

How do u disable comments?

On the page where you choose the deviation to upload and where you write your comments, check the Deviations Options, just below the keywords line, and untick the Allow Comments tickbox.

I can understand disabling comments on say, a political piece of art or something that might offend somebody, but it's really frustrating when you have something really nice that you want to say about the art and the comments are disabled for what seems like no good reason...

Each comment has the option to be hidden by the owner, if they choose. I always wonder what it said though, lol.

The owner of the picture/profile/journal/whathaveyou. Unfortunately, we are not allowed to edit/delete/hide our own comments on someone else's page/deviation.
