Description Making Knots with Gimp's Path Tool.

I may make another, but I think I pretty much covered everything you need to know to make this style of knots.

Let me know if you find this tutorial useful or confusing. Any questions, comments, or critiques are welcome.

This is a great tutorial. Thank you for doing the footwork on this. It has been very helpful to a beginner in Gimp.

I used your tutorial and acknowledged it here:  fav.me/db5tzai

Thanx, great tut, very grateful. Would have appreciated exact dimension fpr second circle, however it got me working out how the rhythm works.

For the circle around the perimeter? It is 350 units in diameter, I think.

im having trouble at the top making the second smaller circle, the first circle always disappears when i start the second

Paths created from selections are set to invisible by default. Once you've created one, you will have to set their visibility in the Paths window in order to see them on the canvas.

Let me know if this solves the problem.

WHAT?? This is possible in GIMP??
Awesome!! Never thought of it

👍: 0 ⏩: 1

CryoSphinx In reply to Dawn-Shade [2011-08-28 17:46:18 +0000 UTC]

Yep, and it's possible for any other program that uses vectors (like Inkscape) too.

I'm having insane difficulties at the point where it says; Take the paths tool again, select the circle and add control points where it intersects with the line. Then delete the unwanted points to make it look like the picture on the right.

Please help!

I'm having the same difficulties -_- can't seem to work it out at all, would really appreciate your help with this

👍: 0 ⏩: 1

CryoSphinx In reply to FPToller [2011-08-27 18:32:01 +0000 UTC]

Can you be more specific?

👍: 0 ⏩: 1

FPToller In reply to CryoSphinx [2011-08-27 19:16:44 +0000 UTC]

I can't work out for the life of me how to get rid of the two lines in the centre of the circle when deleting the control points. The circle just shrinks and flattens the lines but i can't remove them from the middle to get the right shape :/ I hope that's slightly more helpful - maybe not lol!

CryoSphinx In reply to FPToller [2011-08-27 19:50:22 +0000 UTC]

Have you tried erasing the lines before erasing the control points?

CryoSphinx In reply to gunnar120 [2011-07-02 22:35:25 +0000 UTC]

Which part? Adding points or deleting the unwanted ones?

Nothing, I just had a preset on the wrong selection. I'm good now though. Sorry for bothering you. ._.

Wastelander7 In reply to CryoSphinx [2011-07-01 18:01:30 +0000 UTC]

I'm interested in doing scrimshaw. But, I don't have any micarta ([link] a good ivory substitute) But, I do have a crap load of ceramic tile chips. Was thinking of trying to etch the glazed surface. Not sure how it will work out. But, a Celtic/Viking/tribal knot would be a cool design for one.

If it works I'll post some pics on DA. (gotta get some India ink before I can test it out)

You make it look simple! I've been drawing Celtic Knots on paper for a while, never thought to do it on Gmip. Good job!

Oh, but they ARE simple! The hard part is the inspiration.

And if you're interested in drawing them up digitally, check out the Inkscape tutorial as well: [link]

If you find this kind of knot work interesting, you should check out my Inkscape tutorial: [link] I find the process to be a bit more intuitive in that program.

CryoSphinx In reply to AceOfKeys72 [2011-07-01 00:05:48 +0000 UTC]

I haven't used Photoshop in several years so I can't say for certain, but I think it's possible.

AceOfKeys72 In reply to CryoSphinx [2011-07-01 01:07:44 +0000 UTC]

that's good to know. I'd love to try this tut out but I don't want to go through the hassel of getting gimp unless i really need it

👍: 0 ⏩: 1

CryoSphinx In reply to AceOfKeys72 [2011-07-01 17:08:58 +0000 UTC]

You could try Inkscape, it's easy to install and operate, quite robust (and best of all it's free).

Check out my other knot tutorial for it: [link]
