Description
Large File! This is the most efficient and expedient method I have found so far for making knotwork in Inkscape (Or vector art programs in general)
Let me know if you find this tutorial useful or confusing. Any questions, comments, or critiques are welcome.
The end result of the knot can be seen here: [link]
Note: In-case you did not know, Inkscape is free and Open Source, you can find it here: [link]
I have also created a similar tutorial for Gimp, which can be found here: [link]

This is brilliant! (And your other knotwork pieces are lovely!) I will more than likely be using both tutorials to do the knotwork when I digitize some of my jewelry pieces
Keep up the good work and have an awesome day!

It was written for Inkscape, but you should be able to do something similar in most vector programs.

Thank you so much! You finally gave me the idea how to make knotwork. I would never have known how to start XD
I would have drawn everything by hand and without any structure XD

Thankyou! Although I'm having problems with getting pointed edges to curve, I'm not talking about rounding edges, but I can't for the life of me get "make selected nodes smooth" to work! I'm using inkscape .48.1

Try clicking twice on 'Make selected nodes smooth', the first will turn it into a smooth node, but wont modify the handles if it already is one, the second will force it to smooth out by moving the handles. (This also works with the other 'Make selected nodes ...' buttons)

Thanks I didn't realise I had to click the handle itself to make it yellow first ^^'
Okay, so now I've got some really awesome loops, but how do I go about making them pointed at the end?

Do you mean the end of the line? You can change the cap style under 'Fill and Stroke' (Ctrl-Shift-F, or 'Object > Fill and Stroke...') to either butt, round, or square.
The manual covers a lot of ground, and will probably answer your questions in a more concise manner (And maybe some questions you didn't have. ) It can be found under 'Help > Inkscape Manual'

Thanks so much, I've got it working now!
All I've got left to do is change the plain black to white so you can see it all weaving.
This tutorial is really, really great. I'm sure I will be using it in the future, too.

I don't have any computer programs that would let me do it digitally.

Thanks for the tutorial. I've been doing a lot of knots lately and was wondering which program to use for creating them on the computer. I shall try inkscape!

It's my new favorite for knots. Having them in SVG format is quite nice since you don't lose quality when scaling them.
