Description
Mauta
This whale sized creature has horns either side of their jaws which that can push forward so they can ram the thick ice and pry it apart with frightening ease. It does this to be create an airway for it [I have seen similar hole being made on my travels regardless of prey being near.] and to also to scoop up its prey that it catches unaware. I believe that it uses echolocation to find its target but it could also just be listening out for sounds on the ice. This is clearly the apex predator of this biome because if it is not, I would hate to see what preys on this guy!!!
I was walking across the Ice Fields with Slushie tumbling and sliding across the ice around me when we came across a herd of Lupzapada. It would appear to be mating season as the males were headbutting each other and bellowing loudly to announce their dominance while the females watched on with an air of apathy. We kept a distance from them as we did not want to mistaken for a threat.
Sitting on my blanket I took to drawing one of the duels when the ice beneath us swayed. It was like someone had hit mute on the Lupazapada as they went from boisterous and noisy to terrified silence, even Slushie who had been playing with a pebble stopped and darted for my lap.
For a long tense moment there was nothing but the sound of the icy ocean breeze when the ice spilt in two as a pair of silver white horns erupted into the middle of the herd sending them scattering. The horns pried open a hole in seconds with a thunderous crack and all silence was shattered as all the Lupzapada started shrieking and trying to flee but with the ice now angled towards the gaping maw of the looming Mauta all they could do it try and slide into the water. It chomped down on a one unlucky individual giving it a hefty shake splattering the surrounding snow with blood. With one gulp it swallowed it whole and took another panicking creature and another drizzle of blood. Just as quick as the attack began the Mauta sank back into the water.
I think I am going to walk a lot more softly and quietly while I am on the ice.
