Description
It was a warm afternoon, the sun just setting against the growing greenery of spring. Inside the garden shed, Sedge and Alma were doing a bit of spring cleaning. As Sedge swept up some dust under one of the shelves, Alma paused, looking at a pot that had been left filled with sod."Sedge, come here." She said, hop-stepping over towards the pot.
"What is it, Alma? Did I forget something?" Sedge spoke around the small broom she had in her mouth.
"No, can you reach up here? I know you've been getting bigger. There's something I'd like you to see."
Sedge stopped what she was doing, curious, and set the notch-worried broom down on the worn floor. "Ok." she said, approaching the shelves Alma was in front of and standing up on her back legs, trying to get a glimpse of what her surrogate mother was trying to show her. She could just see the bright green gem of a leaf over the edge of the terracotta pot.
"Can you see?" Alma said gently, her voice suddenly a whisper, as if she was afraid the plant was sleeping and didn't want to wake it up.
"Yeah. It's a sprout. What about it?" Sedge had seen a lot of green things sprouting up over the past few weeks. Why was this one special?
"This little thing is a bit out of place, up here all by itself." Alma said, and it seemed a bit like she was talking to herself now. "Alone, while all of the other plants found homes outside among millions of others just like them."
Sedge sighed, thinking she'd figured out what Alma was getting at. She'd never bothered to get to know too many other 'gro, and while she sometimes played with them, she never considered herself part of any of their groups. "Yeah, I know the feeling." she said.
"I thought you might," Alma said with a low chuckle, then lifted sedge up under the arms so she could look into the pot, Sedge's back feet pushing against the lower shelf so that she was almost standing. "Now, do you know why I named you what I did?" Alma said, letting the young 'gro lean against her chest as they looked at the seedling.
"Cuz, I'm a bush?" Sedge said, looking up with wide eyes.
Alma laughed, a bit louder this time. "No, no, because..." she pushed her thumb against the bottom of the sprout, shifting it so that it caught the light a bit better, "This sprout, it's not grass. It's not like the millions of others, not really, even though right now you wouldn't be able to tell. It could be anything. It has room to grow, to spread its leaves and soak up all the sunlight it needs to be a big, strong plant, and its soil is even better than the soil the others have."
Sedge twisted around to look at Alma, furrowing her brow. "But... you do know I'm not actually a plant, right Alma?"
Alma laughed, nodding a bit, "Yes, I know. I just want you to know that, like this plant, you have as much of a chance to be great as any of those out there. Even if it's lonely, you're still loved, and you're still growing. Everything you need is here, all you need is to reach out and take it."
Sedge turned back around to look at the sprout, looking thoughtful. She was like a plant?
"Now." Alma stepped back setting Sedge back on the ground. "It'll be bedtime soon. I know that doesn't mean much to you, but to me it means we have a bit more work to do in here!"
"Right." Sedge nodded, shaking her head so that her hood fell back on her shoulders and running to get her little broom again. She'd have a lot to think about tonight, both about what Alma said, and what she didn't, and what that really meant to her and about the others.
She'd come back tomorrow, though...
She wanted to see this little flower bloom one day.
