Description
Issue 22 was the first ROM comic I ever got and given what a huge fan I have been of that title over the years I thought it was long over due to do a commemorative fan art piece. Lately I've done so much fan art of stuff that never happened in the Marvel Universe (even though it should have!) so I thought I'd change it up a bit this past weekend with a scene that did take place. Here's some stuff I've done of the battles that never happened but should have as well as recent homage art . . .Related content

I always liked Torpedo, it was so shocking to me when he was killed off.

when i re-red the Massacre of Clairton as an adult it becomes more shocking then it was when i was flipping through those issues as a kid. you realize that aside from The Torpedo getting tongue spiked you remember that he was married and the father of two children. Brandy Clark's mother and father were also murdered along with Steve Jackson (first appearance ROM #2) who was Rom's best friend on Earth. he was basically to ROM what Rick Jones was to Captain America, The Hulk and Captain Marvel. but of course we can't forget that Rick Jones also later became a side kick to ROM as well although not as long as with the before mentioned heroes.

Yeah once the male Wraiths were overthrown by the warp witches the book got a lot grimmer in tone, it became a true war comic. I really appreciated that the scale became such that the majority of Marvel heroes ended up getting involved in the climax of the Wraith War. That was some classic stuff. Mature without being ultra violent.

yeah but it's too bad steve ditko had taken over the art at that point. i though this work in the 80s and 90s was atrocious. Sal Buscema would have made the climax of the Wraith War that much more epic just think about how issue 65 would have looked with his pencils.

Yeah, I hear ya. Now I loved Steve back in the day when he did things like The Question, Blue Beetle, even Spiderman but like Jack Kirby his work never evolved through the decades and both of their styles became very dated by the 80s and beyond.

BINGO! many people can't seem to speak ill of Ditkos work despite the obvious because of his legacy in the comic book industry. i don't care about that because i remember as a kid how distraught i was when i saw that change in art work from Sal's dynamic pencils to Ditko's rather flat and kinda goofy looking style. i especially hated the way he drew Rom's eyes it drove me fucken crazy it just made him look down right silly.

I completely agree. Like I said I love Dikto and Kirby but if you dont evolve as an artist you are gonna get left to the wayside. And as for those eyes: blogintomystery.files.wordpres… Nuff said.

Sal is one of the greats (even though I was a bigger fan of his brother John who to me is forever with John Romita Sr the classic Marvel artists). He will always be the definitive Rom and Hulk artist in book. His run on the Hulk was just epic! No one else has ever made the Hulk feel even half so powerful for me.

. . . but don't forget to give Bill Mantlo some of the credit for that seeing as he was the writer for that stuff.

the writer and penciler of a comic books series have a collaboration not so much unlike an actor and director. there are good actors but very often a good director can bring out the very best in that actor if they work well together. so yeah i think the art work in the case of pre-ditko ROM and the Hulk with Bill and Sal was a joint effort. good comic book art is every bit about how scenes in panels are set up and flow to tell a story every bit as much as actually being able to draw the characters and action well which Sal was brilliant at and ditko can't do worth a shit.

The issue that got you hooked!
Thanks for sharing. I know I got into Marvel with some Spider-Man and Spider-Woman I got when I still could not read (so I may have been 4, or early 5, at most). But what made it undeniable that I was a Marvel Zombie was Secret Wars. I loved that one. Still do.

yeah I wasn't able to read either when I first got that issue I was only about 9 but it was really the art work that hooked me in specially when it came to ROM banishing the dire wraiths siskoid.blogspot.com/2008/09/s…
oh yeah Secret Wars wasn't just classic Marvel 80s it was also iconic. I actually met the artist on that series Mike Zeck earlier this summer at the Big WOW Comic Fest in San Jose California which I live close to.

Some people try to be all sofisticated and bash Secret Wars. They say it is just battle after battle with nothing else.
But I like how things develop during the series, with the allegiances changing all the time, with Doom even going to Reed, who, as a second most intelligent human in the planet, *might* perhaps understand things Doom has realized (of course, he did not, because the difference between him and Doom is large indeed).
And there were quite a lot of calm moments, in which the inter-character relationships shined.
This series made everyone in it a favorite of mine. Captain America, the Molecule Man, the Wrecking Crew, Captain Marvel, the Enchantress, Volcana, Titania, Spider-Woman. Of course, Doctor Doom!

especially Dr. Doom! I've never heard anyone say anything bad about that series those "sophisticated" people you mention sound like the kinda idiots that live around here in San Francisco. the kind of people who always have to say to the opposite of what everybody else says just for the sake of being different or hip. people like that don't really think about what makes sense or not regardless of how much status quo it is or not they're just plain narcissists.

Look for reviews of the series online. While it is something openly known that the series is a commercial for a toyline, some people start with that and then say it is nothing more than that.
It is fun to read, since their little minds do not grasp the magnificency that is Jim Shoo-- I mean, Doctor Doom!
