Oh, this makes me think of the 'Freaks' book by Leslie Fiedler I read when I was a kid (I still have it, it was a very good read). I learned about the Elephant Man thanks to that book.

I used to have a copy of Frederick Drimmer's Very Special People,which included excerpts from Treves' memoirs about the Elephant Man. I still have The Big Book Of Freaks,which was one of DC/Vertigo's Big Book series from the 90's.
