Description
Do you struggle to get comments on your art? Are you disappointed in the amount of engagement you get on your uploads, polls and statuses? Consider reading this article and looking at potential ways to widen your reach.
I would also love to know how many views/comments you need to receive on an upload to consider it a 'success'.
Preview: People online are self-absorbed. We're all guilty of this sort of behaviour every now and then in our day-to-day lives, but online we are actively encouraged to obsess over ourselves. Social media exists to plug us into a network of people who could be a potential audience, and within this network our own views and expressions generate the bulk of the content that is generated, with the tacit hope, and even expectation, that we will receive engagement.
There are a few easy things you can do that might just lead to more in the way of engagement:
In status updates, rather than just talking about your day, ask people to talk about their own as well
Instead of putting up a picture and just expecting a flood of comments, ask people to give feedback on a specific part of the design, or to provide an opinion about an element of the character you are unsure of
Consider creating content that requires people's input. For example, if you make a poll, try asking something that is universal and invites people to share their own experiences
When engaging with others, find ways of tying this back to your own content β what have you created that can tie into someone else's narrative?
If you use social media, know your audience. If you're trying to appeal to young people, you might want to consider using Snapchat, where 60% of its users are under 25. If you want to cultivate an audience to sell products to, consider creating a Facebook page where you can ensure your content appears on the news feeds of all those who follow you
On DeviantArt in particular, identify groups you can submit your work to in order to broaden the potential reach of your content to people with an interestΒ

Certainly, you can talk about your experiences, but I believe you will always get more engagement if others can relate to those experiences.

That actually makes sense, I was kind of an attention seeker back them and wanted many watchers etc...Β Β
But know this has changed now and I became more mature, and thought if that was really me back then. I wrote a journal about why I was like this, no expectations to get many favorites or comments just to let people know why.Β Β
Thank you for the advice, though. It really helps.Β Β

Thanks so much for this comment, my friend. Do you feel pressure still to get comments/watchers etc. or do you just create for fun now :@)?

Well, sometimes I do but not as much. Sometimes I don't mind, but it depends on how much I spent on something.Β Β Β
But do not tell or force people to watch/comment/favorite me and my deviations. Now I do itΒ for fun rather than seek attention, but with your advice I'll include more of what other people think in the description and how to improve to become better. And even give other people more feedback because why not.Β Β Β Β

All of that sounds awesome, my friend ^^ In particular, giving feedback to others will also encourage them to engage with you further in the future. Thanks very much for the kind and thoughtful comments.

On a note, I will definitely confirm that FaceBook is the better place to sell art, as most users are
adults and are willing to pay the asking price for a $35+ piece.Β ^u^Β Β Β

Thanks so much, Maddie. I am very happy to hear that you are successful in operating through Facebook - it can certainly be easier to amass a loyal following on there when it comes to cultivating a client base.Β
When you upload to DA, do you pay much attention to views/favourites/comments? Or do you upload and not worry too much about the stats?

^U^Β Aye, it is a good thing!~
Well, depending on my mood, comments can really stress me out for no reason,
so the thing that makes me the most happy are favorites.~
But really, I draw because I love it, even if I got no feedback at all, I'd still draw.Β <3

Your welcome.
I usually aim for 10 or more favorites on my latest deviations. I donβt really get interested in getting favorites on my very old art nor do I care about them getting hatefaves. Just the latest, about June 2017 and later. I would be interested in critique, if you have any problems with my art.

I certainly have no problems with your art! It's interesting that you upload art connected to popular media, such as Steven Universe. Do you tend to find your Steven Universe-related art gets more engagement than your art which isn't tied into a property?

If you don't care too much I admire you in some respects - I'm always thinking about how to engage with the maximum amount of people, but perhaps sometimes neglect producing content for myself. Double-edged sword!

Thanks, my friend. When you upload to DeviantArt, do you think much about how many favourites or views you would like to receive? And if so, are you disappointed if you don't hit those targets?

mind blown a little bit but you aren't wrong ... most people do seem to want to just talk about themself ...
I think if you get 100 views that is good going
π: 0 β©: 1
Cuddlepug In reply to XDescending-PassionX [2017-11-12 17:29:10 +0000 UTC]
That's definitely a good mount of people who have taken time out of their day to check out your content! There's nothing wrong with talking about yourself, but if you want to maximise audience engagement it doesn't hurt to find ways of helping others relate.

SpokenMind93 In reply to Cuddlepug [2017-11-12 17:33:19 +0000 UTC]
I love to get more comments xD Faves come second and views last I guess. Verbal feedback is always a lot nicer than a "like".
But I guess, when I read your tips on how to get more, I notice that I often make things for me and that when I make things for someone else that it gets alot more attention.
π: 0 β©: 1
Cuddlepug In reply to SpokenMind93 [2017-11-12 17:36:49 +0000 UTC]
I agree that comments are significant, as it's always interesting to speak to people directly who provide their thoughts and feedback. I value views more than favourites, but that is probably because I don't tend to get too many favourites on my content (most likely because I tend to try and draw people in with 'clickbait' headlines).
It's interesting you receive more engagement when you make content for others. With you in particular I admire how you get a lot of engagement from speaking your mind. That's definitely one way to get people talking!
