If you thought I had forgotten about my mermaid-AUyou are very much mistaken XD
Nope, this story is very much alive and at last getting much needed attention...
ahem...
Anyhow - Ame is a betta fish (or a fighting fish)
magnificently beautiful even for fish standards but unfortunately very much a hermit
- as one of the few fishes with an actual occupation, Ame is a record-keeper or a librarian of the reef (no they don't have books)
her duty is to remember and keep safe whatever there is important to remember.
She lives outside of the reef and Mercury is practically the only one who knows she is there
since he is kind of an apprentice of hers.
Loves her job, has no intentions of finding a mate whatsoever ... nope

What's sorta funny is she's a girl. And it's the male betta's that usually have large, colorful fins to attract females. Female betta's have smaller fins, and while still bright in color, not as eye-catching like Ame.
I'm not judging! Just sayin'. She still looks amazing and super cool! Ame kinda looks like my betta too. Cept mine's blue, and male.

- and yeah Ame is actually a bit fancier than the other bettas on the reef (one more reason she moved out and became a hermit - too much attention from males and bad attention from other ladyfishes!)

STORY TIME! yay! ... well I have plans and stuff on this AU and currently it's actually the most top on my mind ^^'
so yes there is a storyline - that follows Lumia and her cousin Piper moving in to a seashore estate their parents left them and who have quite a bunch of issues to deal with...
especially after they happen to stumble upon a couple of curious little fish, Mercury and way less curious Rody, who broke the rules and sneaked away from the reef they live in
Everyone in the crew is a different sort of fish yes - Speed is a moorish idol, Rody a goldfish and Raze a lion fish ... Mercury is a mixed-breed
and Kron... well you'll see soon enough ;D

I had a pretty blue boy who had some purple in him, his name was Kanda and he kept me company during much of my freshman year of college.
That sounds so cool! Do amazing adventures follow our intrepid explorers Mercury and Rody? (Heeeeee goldfish, how cute!) What sort of issues do Lumia and Piper encounter? How does Amethyst or Raze or Kron (go figure he's a shark!) fit into the story? *flails about* Tell me more! I must know! XD

I've never had any fish - we are a cat-family so an aquarium was never an option and I thought it was too much work XD
but bettas are one of my favorite fishes!
Well of course
to a university of marine sciences with her unusual find - so the two want to learn from each other. But Lumia is struggling with money and her on-off relationship with an ex-boyfriend
who doesn't quite understand her dreams and passion for science. Also Piper being ill with cancer pressures her since the two are the only remaining relatives to one another.
Piper for one is a lil dreamer who finds someone to share it all in Rody.
Ame, Speed and Raze live in the same reef with Merc and Rody. Speed is Merc's neighbor and one of the few who doesn't think he's a madfish with her interest towards anything related to humans - who
is kind of a voice of sense to him and also a shoulder to rely on. Ame is a record-keeper Merc visits often and who is partly the reason he ever came up with the idea of going to the surface (something the other fishes NEVER do).
However the problem is - the reef is guarded by (generally lazy) lion fishes and of course Merc and Rody end up pissing of the one and only guard that actually has some juice in her XD So in short - Raze is the bad cop.
Kron is a wanderer so he ends up in the middle of everything by accident while he visits the reef for shelter and ends up helping Raze with catching a couple of runaway fishes.

Ah, so Lumia and Piper are human in this AU. I had thought they'd also be fish. Sounds like they've both had it rough though, poor things. :<
Is Rody still a non-talker in this AU? I found your previous doodles with this AU, so they can change size and fit into jars? How does that work? D: Is that a Merc and Rody thing only or can any of them shrink and fit in a jar? Could you imagine Kron in a jar? XD
What did Merc and Rody do to make Raze so mad? Are they not supposed to leave the reef? or did they do something else? How does Raze end up roping Kron into helping her catch the escapees? (Merc and Rody I assume?) Do they catch the runaways? What happens then?

Yes those two are human :3 Close to each other since they grew up together after Piper's parents died so she moved in with Lumia's.
However after the death of Lumia's dad they were left on their own - and being older and mature Lumia feels responsible for Piper.
Yes, Rody doesn't talk. No one knows if he is silent on purpose or if he's actually mute - but yeah, super typical shy Rodyfish >u<
Ah now this is my master twist. You see - most of the time the fishpeople are pretty much the size of their corresponding fish (e.g Raze is a lionfish so she's larger than Rody and Merc)
however during full and new moon if they happen to wander to the surface they grow in size. This excludes sharks though - they are already huge enough. Any other fish changes size - but none knows they can since the fishes have avoided surface for aaages. This is also why people don't know of their existence.
So the fish are not supposed to leave the reef. It's not forbidden in a sense but all the little fish are taught to never go outside the reef areas. Lionfishes are there to guard the reef
and make sure no-one gets out... most of the guards are lazy though since no-one ever even tries to get out - except for Raze who's the only dutiful one around. And of course on they way to their adventure Merc and Rody happen to stumble upon her XD As they do manage to sneak out and Raze finds out about it - man it's a blow to her ego and she also wishes to keep everyone safe and doesn't want Merc and Rody caught by humans (fate all the fish are terrified of).
Kron only happened to swim by and seek shelter from the reef to rest - and only the guards may let him in. So Raze made a deal with him - he could stay on the reef if he helped him to find Merc and Rody and bring them back after which Raze would make sure they won't go wandering out again. Kron is mainly amused by this since he doesn't share Raze's view of keeping the fishpeople safe, but well he agrees on cooperation so save his own nerves.

Oh goodness, so they're typically small by default. That's a pretty nifty idea, I don't think I've seen any mermaid type stories where they actually correspond to the size of the fish instead of being human sized. That would certainly make people ( and sharks!) more intimidating!
So are Mercury and Rody the only ones to make contact with people or do the other fishes end up meeting Lumia and Piper too?

And they sort of consider themselves fishes and they don't have a culture or traditions or institutions of ruling ...
Yeah Kron is like 5 m tall and hugeass bastard soo....
Only them - Mercury is the first one ever in the recollection of the fishes to get an idea to break some "rules"
and he kind drags Rody along (if it was up to him they would have just stayed in the safe of the reef) - so they meet
and become friends with Lumia and Piper. In addition of the two Kron is the only one who ends up meeting them
(as the story is now - I have some little sequels planned too that might include some more meetings with Speed and Ame for instance)

Poor Rody is usually just along for the ride isn't he? XD So When Merc and Rody meet Lumia and Piper do they stay with them, or do they return to the reef and have repeat escapes to visit their new friends? How did their first meeting go? How about when they meet Kron?

They return the reef and start visiting the girls in regular basis because Merc is so curious about everything human.
The first meeting included some screaming and lots of "I don't believe this"s from Lumia...

I bet that drives poor Raze absolutely nutty that Merc and Rody are repeat offenders for sneaking out of the reef. Unless she eventually turns a blind eye to their shenanigans? Or does she instigate a chase each time the boys swim off?
Ah so there was a lot of flailing about and not understanding what's going on then. Did the girls first meet Merc and Rody as small fishes or people sized fishes?
Phft! Rody bites Piper? Oh my! XD Poor Piper, but I suppose that's what she gets for being grabby with Rody? I'm assuming she gets grabby at least, or else she stuck her fingers too close to his mouth.
It took me a moment to realize that Kron is likely not the one on the boat because I was very concerned about why Kron would be on a boat. Granted I'm not sure why Rody and Merc would be on a boat either? I am I safe to assume it's Lumia's boat?

They were small when they first met :3 and no-one had any idea they
were even able to change size.
It was only that one time XD poor guys was panicking a bit... as she managed to catch him
and Rody had to find a way to escape her grasp.
Rody and Merc weren't
as was Kron too - or behind it to be precise.
And yes, it's Lumias (or used to be her father's, only a small row-boat with an engine)

Who was more shocked by the sudden size transformation then? The fishy boys or the human girls? X'D Who screamed the loudest?
Poor Rody, scared half to death. And poor Piper, I'm sure she needed a band-aid after getting bit by a scared Rody-fish. Hopefully they both survived the unfortunate biting incident with minimal emotional trauma?
Ah good, fish are in the water where they should be, it's far easier for them to breath there as opposed to on a boat. (Can they breath air? Do they have gills? Or lungs? Or both?)

I'd say they were additionally surprised XD yet Rody and Merc of course realized it first
and had good time settling down before meeting the girls. IF Rody talked
- he would have been the one to scream the loudest. Scared half to death again ...
No worries he was so tiny his teeth didn't leave much of a mark
- so Piper survived only with subtle confusion and Rody too got over
his little trauma eventually.
No no - they prefer the water. When small they are sometimes carried around in jars
but other than that ... They can breathe air, so they have some sort of lungs in addition of their gills
- however breathing air is like breathing thin air for us human so it gets harder the longer they have to do
it unless they get nice sips of water in between.

Hopefully Mercury and Rody don't get into too much trouble though, or bring trouble back with them by accident. D: They already make Raze's job more difficult.
Ah, so the size changing thing was discovered by Merc and Rody first prior to Piper and Lumia meeting them. How did they end up meeting officially? What was their first encounter with each other like?
I'm very glad to know that neither Rody or Piper required therapy after the biting incident. XD

Well Raze has a reason to worry - but mainly it's about Lumia rather than the boys whether the situation would get worse...
the girls live quite far from the city and have very little visitors so the chances of someone discovering the little fishpeople aren't too big
... unless Lumia decided to share the info of them with someone...
Well it's not known whether Merc and Rody were the first ones to find out about it - probably not.
But fishes only have a "history" that covers only what they can remember and what has been passed on by words - so it doesn't go very long back.
The official meeting was just when the boys swam too close to the beach (due to Merc being curious) where Lumia and Piper were spending their afternoon
... and Piper managed to catch Rody in a jar XD the meeting itself turned a bit ... chaotic
Nah they are fine - Rody of course took a while to get over his terrible phobia of humans
but eventually he learned to like Piper a lot.
I have a bit of a theory of how my fish people came to be that explains why they have both organs...
this won't be exactly explained (rather speculated only) in the story but I've thought it through ;D

Oh goodness, poor Rody! I'm sure he did not enjoy being put in a jar at all! No wonder he got mouthy and bit Piper. XD I'm glad they all still managed to become fiends even after an awkward first meeting.

Well it's kind of a them being a human fish hybrid - that came to be in the past as some sort of a twist of evolution
- they used to be bigger (human size) which partly explains our folklore and legends of mermaids as some lucky people got to see them...
However there never was too many of them and for whatever reason their ranks started to grow smaller and dropped remarkably after industrial revolution -
the same time the fishes born were smaller and eventually all of them were rather tiny - this was due to both evolution and pollution in the ocean
and the climate change which lead them to be an endangered species - hence they haven't been seen since the middle ages basically.
So the lungs are sort of a relic (like we have the tailbone).

Of course Mercury would enjoy being carried around in a jar, that way he gets to see all the new and different things on the land! It must be very exciting for him. I imagine poor Rody on the other hand probably dislikes the feeling of being moved around against his volition and may keep hitting his head on the glass. It's probably just better to leave Rody be in the water XD
I like getting to learn the ropes of other people stories and AUs!
I think your theory makes sense, it's actually quite believable as far as fantasy creatures go, the idea that they once were land dwelling and evolved into water dwelling creatures. It's just a good thing that their lungs still function after however many hundreds of years of not being required, or else Mercury and Rody's adventure would be significantly shorter!

Rody isn't really interested in humans or anything on earth really - he would have not tagged along in the first place
if Mercury had not dragged him with him. It was a quite a fight for the first few times - and later on Piper was the only reason
he kept leaving the reef with Merc. But yeah, jars are a no no unless he absolutely has to XD
Think about the lungfish for instance
Besides most of the history of fishes is unknown and we don't know for how long they have avoided the surface exactly...
Industrial revolution was less than 200 years ago and before that people didn't have much chances to explore the entire ocean so closely...
I haven't quite decided on how fast/slow the fishpeople change or age - but at least they are super vulnerable to the changes in their natural habitat.
I don't intend to fully explain all this in the story since it's not needed, but I had to come up with some sort of a theory (or Lumia did)
and sure if the boys couldn't breather and talk on surface there wouldn't be much adventure to create XD

If Rody is so disinterested in leaving the reef and exploring the surface world with Ariel Mercury, how'd he get coerced into leaving in the first place? Bribery? Blackmail? Forcibly dragged by the tail? Mercury continually harassing him till he agreed? What about after the first awkward meeting? How'd he get convinced to keep coming back with Merc? Before he decides he likes Piper that is.
I can't say I'd probably enjoy being carried around in a jar either. XD
There's actually a really cool "mocumentary" about mermaids I'd watched once explaining how fish people came to be and it was actually pretty interesting.The idea was that at the same time the very first homo-sapiens were evolving some went to the forests and some went to the water in search of food. They eventually began hunting fish, then they evolved to be able to hold their breath underwater for an extended period of time, then webbing started appearing between fingers, and so on ad so forth. Your idea follows a similar vein. c:

Simply being dragged from arm/tail/fins/whatever XD Mercury didn't give him much choice
since he wanted someone with him on the adventure and possibly to lure the guards. When they got outside of the reef
Rody was way to scared to go back alone so he had no choice but to follow Merc.
Rody would easily have the strength to fight back - but he's too shy and wary to do so (especially since Merc is pretty much his only friend)
After the first meeting - similar methods were put to use... and some blackmailing about Merc telling everyone Rody was with him ...
and some threats with jars...
Yeah that's pretty much something I had in mind
irrelevant for the story but fun to speculate!
I really reeeaally plan to draw this! It's one of my stories that actually has a solid plot and that is currently basically ready
to be written down and then drawn... I might do some practices first and some concept doodling needs to be done
but rest assured this is going to be a thing!
