Using desaturation causes a slight loss of detail and shadow transparency. Try using Lab Color -- Image/Mode/Lab Color, go to Channels (between Layers and Paths) and drag the 'a' channel into the garbage can ('b' will follow), as well as 'Lightness.' You will then have to go back to Image/Mode and change it to Grayscale, then to RGB color to use all the Photoshop tools.
