Shadow has a long, complicated history spanning multiple decades, though most of them were lost to him due to a 50-year long cryogenic slumber that essentially left him thrust into a world he couldn't recognize. Over time, he has battled with his own identity and the many labels his creators, loved ones and enemies alike have stuck upon him: The Ultimate Lifeform, Scion of the Black Arms - though things weren't always so clear for him, Shadow has found his own way through his maze of memories and come out the other side vowing to never turn back. It's easy to mistake him as being rude or uncaring, but his stoic demeanour is simply the result of a total lack of social awareness and a predisposition to keeping quietly to himself. Shadow is, in actuality, an intelligent and thoughtful young man who, while perhaps lacking in tact or empathy to some, is willing to do whatever is necessary to help innocent people.

While travelling the world post-Sonic Forces, Shadow found a trail that had the potential to lead him to Doctor Eggman's current whereabouts, seeing him off the grid and hunting barely-lukewarm clues. Upon trying to incite Chaos Control to warp to the next site connected to his search, Shadow came into close proximity with a Rabbithole - the wormhole acting as a sort of 'pit' in space that drew him in as he was trying to teleport near it's location. The reaction between Shadow's Chaos Energy and the Rabbithole's distorted makeup led to a violent flinging onto an alien world which was in the midst of a horrific crisis: Planet Taotao. Upon waking, he saw innocent bystanders fleeing from dark invaders and an encroaching blight that threatened to swallow the planet whole...
There was no time to sit and question what had happened, he had to act now!

Trivia:
- Shadow's jacket in this story is sewn together by Nene after he made an absentminded comment to her about the cold wind on Planet Eden's night-time plains. He's actually quite resistant to the cold as the Ultimate Lifeform and was simply making an observation, but Nene put her heart into the gift, so he wears it out of respect.

- While he's calmed down a lot, Shadow still occasionally struggles with his temper and sometimes needs someone to help him keep a level head in times where his blood starts to boil. He'd never say it out loud, but Sonic is actually fantastic at this.
