Description Thinking of feeding the birds recently with the bad weather i thought about this little tutorial I started making a while back.

I was stuck at home for a few months after tearing ligament and muscle in my leg, I still wanted to shoot and had seen people do similar things to this, nice just to see the birds up close if sited well.

Not an original idea but one worth sharing.

Suet or lard can be used to bind the seed, I prefer suet as it is not so greasy as lard.

^wynnesome points out that small ready made logs can be bought with suet plugs that fit the pre-drilled holes.

I've read, that the suet is bad for birds... Isn't it?
Especially with salt -___-

I have not heard that, the RSPB say it is fine to feed as do other groups, so many pet stores sell suet based products for birds, if it was bad for them I think it would be noticeable very quickly.

thanks so much for sharing this. A great idea but the squirrels always gobble it up.

If you add some cayenne pepper to this the squirrels won't touch it. Our stores here sell the ready made suet cakes with it in and after seeing for myself that the squirrels didn't go after it I started adding it to homemade mixes. Apparently it has no effect on the birds and I haven't noticed any of them avoiding it.

Awesome. I have hesitated in feeding the birds around here because the squirrels just gouge it all down. I have bought all kinds of feeders and they always manage to get into them, their very smart those rodents. I have missed feeding the birds. It is one of my favorite things to do. I so, appreciate you telling me about this.

Not a problem.

For my regular bird feeder pole I bought a white plastic umbrella stand and drilled through the center so the pole could go all the way through. I put it on the pole upside down so the flat part catches the seed that falls from the feeder and the slope prevents the squirrels climbing up from the bottom. It's held on with a large hose clamp underneath and has worked for over a year and the birds like getting the seed off the flat top where the cats can't get them.

It looks a lot like this but was far cheaper and the home improvement store [link]

For those who for whatever reason aren't into the "do it yourself" aspect, you can also purchase "suet logs" and plugs made to fit the pre-drilled holes in them!

wynnesome In reply to cycoze [2010-01-11 22:16:09 +0000 UTC]

I totally agree. Then again, there are certain projects I will jump wholeheartedly into tearing up stuff and putting it together... and others where I just don't have the right skills or tools or idea of how to begin doing it!

cycoze In reply to wynnesome [2010-01-11 22:26:29 +0000 UTC]

Tools are important, I can remember years ago struggling with the wrong tools for the job, for instance a small stubby screwdriver while putting three inch screws to hold a cupboard up, sprained my wrist, someone told me to use a long screwdriver and what a difference it made, now of course use an electric screw driver to save any aching

wynnesome In reply to cycoze [2010-01-11 22:56:18 +0000 UTC]

Definitely. Right tool for the job, and knowing what that tool IS, can make the difference of doing something with ease, or having no clue/chance!

Nice idea. We also made food for the birds this year.
We had little plastic cups (there was icecream inside) and put fat with seeds inside. After the fat was cold and got hard in the cup, we hang them on strips into bushes. The birds love them. We also use the fat rings and food balls in nets you get in supermarkets and this year we also put a bird-house with seeds.
But it was fun creating an own food-place

I have seen and heard of people filling half coconut shells and also been told here that open pine cones make unusual feeders.

Once again you reminded me of something, I have a cedar log out in the shed with holes drilled in it and my husband bought me some ready made suet plugs for Christmas which will fit right into those holes!
