Description
i just had to draw Sombra being absolutely enchanted when Sunburst uses his magic. he had no earthly idea that his little tangerine was a failed catalyst and is perfectly content to watch whenever he practices his magic.
(btw, Sunburst doesn't have to be using magic for his hair and eyes to get all glowy. it happens whenever his emotions run high, mostly out of his control)
anyway, moving on
i did get around to redesigning Shining Armor.
while Twilight consists of purples, Shining is all blues. I gave him a thick white blaze and lighter bald-face marking. also, white sock markings, because I love them. really rolled with pale yellow as a complementary color, and it looks really good on him imo. overall, i like the new design i gave him.
anyway, moving on to a bit of history about him.
while the entire Sparkle family was always terribly intermingled with magic, Shining Armor Sparkle was never the best of the bunch. he could perform some powerful spells, but overall, he was quite average, especially compared to the rest of his family. even his younger sister could cast more advanced spells.
but although he never held much interest in wizardry spells, he excelled in offensive and defensive magic. he loved studying swordsmanship and combat strategy, and was more physically involved with his peers. his family was estranged (unicorns focus more on magic, obviously, while physical tasks, like combat, are normally left to more physically capable ponies, especially earth ponies) but supported him regardless, albeit confused as to how to do so.
as he continued to train in combat, he met Cadence in his combat classes. she was an alicorn at the time, and though she looked tall and thin and fragile, she was a truly formidable fighter in the ring. Shining and Cadence made for a good match, and began dating. Cadence absolutely loved his little sister, Twilight, and babysat her whenever she visited their house.
seeing as he was doing well in his swordsmanship, Shining decided to become a Canterlot palace guard. he ended up being a fantastic guard. he moved up the ranks incredibly fast, and through Cadence, he became personally acquainted with the twin sisters, Celestia and Luna. both of them ended up being good friends with him. Celestia enjoyed sparring with him in their spare time, and she found that his skillful handling of weapons was knight-worthy. so she knighted him.
after Cadence was assigned with the task of ruling over the Crystal Empire, she decided that Shining would make for an excellent emperor. so they married. their encounter with Chrysalis really strengthened their bond with each other and with their family. to the rest of Equestria, Shining and Cadence were the newest elite supercouple.
Shining had gained plenty of confidence during his guardsmanship (whatever you call it), but he was still nervous on the inside. the thought of going from a knight to an emperor felt like a really big stretch to him, and he wasn't sure he was prepared for it. but as a guard, he learned to handle pressure better, and took it on without too much trouble. he was the perfect emperor for the newfound Crystal Empire, and Cadence was the perfect empress. they were hardly prepared for an attack from King Sombra almost immediately into their rule, and though they almost lost, they welled up their strength and handled the downfall with astounding grace.
since Twilight's ascension and Sombra's reformation, their rule has been largely uneventful. Shining has fallen very easily into the role of an emperor. he still is unsure of himself most days, but Cadence works hard to support him, and he works even harder to support her. he leads the powerful army of the Crystal Empire, and often leads lengthy patrols around the empire to ensure public safety. he is very physically involved in the safety of his citizens and their lives, and crime is nearly nonexistent under his vigilance. despite his skills and line of work, he is a very gentle and quite nervous fellow who has difficulty interacting with ponies. his social skills are getting better
