from a young age, Broken Heart was capable of seeing ghosts. he could see the faint shadows of deceased ponies lovingly watching over their relatives, nothing more than hazy outlines that he could barely see in his peripherals. but two spirits were always following him around, visible to only him. his dead grandparents, Crystalline Love, and Gunnar.
he's known and seen them since the day he was born, watching over him constantly. one was pleasant and endlessly loving, the other was quiet, bitter, and judgemental. Crystalline Love had watched over her son for thousands of years, ever since her death. and she felt now that it was her duty to watch over her grandchildren.
Gunnar was pulled along moreso out of curiosity than out of love for his family. in life, he had never met his son. he was brutally killed before he was even born. he was greatly intrigued by his offspring, and even more by his grandchildren.
Crystalline saw great potential in her grandchildren. she doted on them endlessly, constantly telling Brooke how proud she was of him. she was terribly out of touch with the modern world, but was so, so very proud of her son and this new life he had forged for himself, being a revered and peaceful leader of his own kingdom and taking good care of his citizens. she taught her grandson to be kind and selfless, and for much of his youth, he was a very optimistic young fellow.
but Gunnar was never so sure. he was always skeptical of 'pony softness', and told Brooke that if he wanted to grow up to be a good ruler of the Umbrum, he needed to be tough. trust no one. work alone. don't get attached.
Sunstar was the golden child between them. Brooke felt worthless, like he could never impress his father. but maybe he could impress his grandfather. so he worked to follow everything he told him, ignoring poor Crystalline Love, who tried her best to steer her grandson back onto the right path. but he never listened, if only in an effort to impress at least one member of his family, even if that member was an asshole.
still, Love and Gunnar work as the angel and the devil on Brooke's shoulders, trying to steer him in opposite paths despite his deep decline. both grandparents want the best for him, but they have completely different views on how to make him out to be the best he can be. Brooke still talks to both of them well into adulthood, albeit a lot more discreet than he did as a child. he's been working hard to try and forge his own path rather than entertain the whims of his deceased family.

- Brooke doesn't know why he can see the dead. he thinks that maybe the reason he can see his grandsire and granddam is because they claimed to have watched over their son while he was in a comatose state, and they became more aware of his existence after his ascension. they only latched onto Brooke because he's the only pony who can see them and talk to them, though why he can see spirits in the first place is a complete mystery (might have something to do with the Crystal Heart and Sombra's and Sunburst's connections to it)
- Gunnar and Crystalline Love can take physical forms that others can see, and they use these disguises to physically interact with and protect their family (Gunnar uses a physical form mostly because he just misses the influence he had when he was alive and visible)
- Gunnar used to be the Umbrum King, or something like it. idk. haven't fleshed him out yet
- there are two other ponies in the world that can see Brooke's dead grandparents: Videre (Sunstar's lover), and Kairos
- Brooke calls them Love and Big G (or just G), mostly to mess with them (Gunnar hates that nickname)
- at night, if Sombra doesn't take his medication and starts hallucinating, he can sometimes see flickers of Crystalline Love and Gunnar hovering around Brooke. of course, he doesn't think they're real. but they are very real. both parents treasure these few moments when he can actually see them (though one of them won't admit it)
- the dead Umbrum can be loving and cuddly when he wants to be. he's most often ignorant to other's emotions, almost to a sociopathic degree. but he does love his grandson and strives to protect him to the best of his ability and make him out to be a good future king in the best way he knows how: through tough love
- Crystalline Love is a lot more gentle and friendly, a bit of a pushover. she's the best at delivering words of encouragement.
