Description This is a small watercolour of my (now ex), German girlfriend Frauke. ( It's 3 X 4 inches. Part of a small series I did a few years back. It's actually Pelican Watercolours and Dr. P.H. Martins Synchromatic Water Dyes. I love the vibrancy of those things. It's fairly simple, but I'll admit, I'm pleased with any watercolour that turns out at all, and doesn't look like some pastelly hippy bullshit.
It's always satisfying to accomplish what you're trying to illustrate with a minimum of effort, especially for myself, as I seem driven to elongate even the simplest of concepts. I usually work in acrylics. Watercolours (for me) are somewhat merciless to work with, which is probably why I don't take them on too often. Like saying something in Latin, if you plan on making any sense, you pretty much have to begin with the end in mind. There is no changing horses mid-stream, no reworking areas you've mistakenly built in the wrong hue, or made too dark. My trash runneth over with failed watercolours.
I suffer from the delusion that my watercolours should read as realistically as my acrylics do. More of a psychiatric disorder than an artistic philosophy, I settle for wasting tons of time and paper, hoping a few paintings might turn out nicely (as this one did). But while I work, it prevents me from letting the medium do what it does naturally, and best. I'm still working on last years Christmas card design. It's a watercolour, because, you know, they're so fast and easy.

I love this peice. I understand your watercolour conundrum as well. I happen to prefer watercolour, but if you screw up you are done. I just started working with acrylics and I find them to be difficult just because I try to use them like a watercolour. ^_^ Apparently you can acheive a watercolour painting that looks realistic but I've only seen people who are very very disciplined in the art of watercolour manage that. This peice is very well done though. I like the way the hand is positioned. It doesn't look like a pose and that is why I like it I've decided. ^_^

Wow. I love this piece, personally. The colors are vibrant without being blindingly bright. I can see why it was chosen for a DD.

And to Kayarlynnean, I am female too, and I don't find it offensive at all.

Kayarlynnean [2006-05-27 18:19:52 +0000 UTC]

No offense but I hate this painting or whatever it is. Being a girl myself I find it very offensive and wrong. If you're going to paint a female her face should be in it. There is a difference between artistic appreciation of the female form and just wanting to look at their private parts. I find this very offensive so I'm suprised that it was chosen to be a feautured deviation. I know a lot of women that would take offense at this and if you were a girl you probably would too.

I don't know where to begin? Firstly, thanks for the passionate comments about my painting. It is a painting. If you'd like to purchase it you can see that for yourself.
I don't take offense at other peoples sensibilities or sentiments. You are entitled to your opinion about how you are portrayed. I encourage you to stick to that conviction if it continues to function for you. You are not however entitled, just because you're a girl, to decide how other women are comfortable or uncomfortable being portrayed. Who are you to decide this for other people?
If I just wanted to look at womens 'private parts', I wouldn't spend the time or energy I do pursuing that through a process as painstaking as painting them.
I might also ask just exactly what private parts of Frauke's you're seeing in my painting of her, besides her open mind?
Having said all this, I'm going to tell you something that's really none of your business, but, being a girl, you might understand. Not everyone cares to have their face shown with their naked body on-line or hanging in galleries and coffee shops. Some want to live and work in the city they are shown and not have their 'private parts' associated with their faces. This happens to be the case with a few of the women I have had the honor of knowing, loving and painting. And happens to be the case with this painting, although neither Frauke or myself consider this a particularly risque image of her. She wore bathing suits this revealing in public. I have stacks of nudes I've painted or drawn which show my models faces. Perhaps in the interest of respecting women you'd have me display these works, despite the wishes of the women who posed for them.
I understand you have distinct and strong notions about what is fair or unfair regarding women and their possible objectification. However you must understand that no person can define and decide for another person something that is simply and rightly a decision made by and for themselves. To deny an individual this right is to objectify them in your own different, but no less oppressive way. Protecting your rights as a woman needn't entail destroying the rights of other women.

Wow, that's quite a close-minded opinion you have there. 'If you're going to paint a female her face should be in it', why, exactly? A face isn't the only beautiful thing about a lady. The curve of her hips, her thighs, her hands, a woman is beautiful in her entirety. I'm trying to understand where you're coming from, but really, I don't see it. This isn't even a nude lady, she fully clothed, in a beautiful pose.

'There is a difference between artistic appreciation of the female form and just wanting to look at their private parts,' This was a realllly hypocritical statment, for what you said. If you consider this 'just wanting to look at their private parts,' what do you consider artistic appreciation?

This is art, and you have your own opinion, but don't blab about the "Offencive" "wrong" "degrading" stuff, because that's all a bunch of jack. *Salutes* Now that I have made my comment against this comment, I shall fav the beautiful artwork.

The American (the 'a' is capitalized.) way to spell things is not the only way to spell things. In fact, it's rarely right. For example, 'colors' and 'colours' have different spellings, but they are the same word. Okay? Really, punctuate your sentances, capitalize the first letter, and use commas. You'd seem more intelligent.

Plus, the language is 'English,' not 'American.'

And, no is not the same in all languages. You seem terribly misinformed, and the way you are acting really adds to the sterotype that all 13-year-olds are immature. I'm thirteen, and I don't act like you. I'm quite proud of that.

I'm stupid because I use my ability to spell, and I use proper grammar. Also, the fact that I put a decent amount of thought into my responses also makes me stupid? Immaturity at it's peak. Now, this has nothing to do with the original topic, and I'd rather not spam this beautiful picture, it'd be much easier to communicate through notes, or comment on my page. Whatever you'd like.

You know, my original question was why a womans face should be in a picture, and 'what do you consider artistic appreciation?[of a woman's form].' I would've possibly accepted your opinion, if you would've answered those two questions. Also, I wouldn't've had a reason to talk to you anymore. Hmm.

Really, talking to you is quite fun. You get insulting, then ease up, hoping the other person will too.

A bully
No one likes a bully
Putting me down won't get you anywhere
Think about it this way
Would God want you to do what you're doing to me
Or would Jesus for that matter (who is God)
I don't think so
But then again maybe you don't believe in God
Which would explain why you're treating me so horribly

Obviously, you can't write well. I'm such a bully. Haha, great. No one likes a bully. Obviously. But, before you go calling me a bully, what you responded to my 'put-downs' with was purely that of a saint, right?

I don't belive in God. The Bible is just a book to me. However I have my reasons for believing such, and it doesn't have to do with 'I'm mean, therefore I don't believe in God.' Do you honestly think everyone who doesn't believe in God is mean? Well, remember this; I'm just painfully honest. The truth hurts, hon.

sounds like you need to lighten up... the reason the female body is so prevalent in art is because it is so beautiful. its shapes and curves stand out on their own without needing a face to go with it. im a female and i have a lot of female subjects in my art....you should be proud of your body and not offended by it. this is a very tasteful and sensual piece...its not like some trashy pic of some tits just made for teenage boys to jerk off to. all it is is a hint of stomach and covered up breasts... and very well done in a difficult medium like watercolors.

theres nothing offensive about it.... perhaps you should smoke some weed...may make you lighten up a bit and appreciate art for what it is.

I don't take offense to my body
I just see something you don't

i didnt miss your point..i disagree with it. youre saying theres more to a woman than their body... of course there is... everyone knows that... this particular piece is just showing a very beautiful curve... its not saying thats the only thing worthwhile about a woman...or anything like that.... its just a simple piece of the whole great thing that is the human person.

im not the one who needs help. i look at things and appreciate the beauty in them and the meaning. you are the one who shuts their doors to things you dont understand. plus you are young young young. try to see other peoples veiws and learn instead of thinking that anything you dont agree with is wrong.
