Description This is a small watercolour of my (now ex), German girlfriend Frauke. ( It's 3 X 4 inches. Part of a small series I did a few years back. It's actually Pelican Watercolours and Dr. P.H. Martins Synchromatic Water Dyes. I love the vibrancy of those things. It's fairly simple, but I'll admit, I'm pleased with any watercolour that turns out at all, and doesn't look like some pastelly hippy bullshit.
It's always satisfying to accomplish what you're trying to illustrate with a minimum of effort, especially for myself, as I seem driven to elongate even the simplest of concepts. I usually work in acrylics. Watercolours (for me) are somewhat merciless to work with, which is probably why I don't take them on too often. Like saying something in Latin, if you plan on making any sense, you pretty much have to begin with the end in mind. There is no changing horses mid-stream, no reworking areas you've mistakenly built in the wrong hue, or made too dark. My trash runneth over with failed watercolours.
I suffer from the delusion that my watercolours should read as realistically as my acrylics do. More of a psychiatric disorder than an artistic philosophy, I settle for wasting tons of time and paper, hoping a few paintings might turn out nicely (as this one did). But while I work, it prevents me from letting the medium do what it does naturally, and best. I'm still working on last years Christmas card design. It's a watercolour, because, you know, they're so fast and easy.

haha, yeah, watercolor is not something that comes easy to perfectionists, but you did an amazing job here

the blending on the stomach and and arms is perfect, or maybe blended isn't the right word? oh well.

your sarcastic sense of humor in the description is enjoyable too

The effect you've achieved with the watercolours is amazing- you make it look easy, despite saying otherwise! And the drawing behind the painting is lovely, especially the bent, tapering fingers, coming from an arm in a tricky position to realistically represent.

Thanks for the compliment. I'm happy you enjoyed it. It's not easy. As I mentioned, watercolours are tough and I start many that fall short and right into the trash. Hands are a strange thing to render. They can be so beautiful or so awkward. I lucked out. The pose is a nice one. It shows off the best there is in a hand and hides that awkwardness, was natural and revealed more depth than other angles. Also, she had beautiful hands to work with. So were they, I wanted her hand, one day. Thanks again, David

jeez way to pop my little ego bubble! it's awesome. It's so hard with watercolours to get a smooth consistency and no brush marks and whatnot... woah man... your painting should be illegal... *quickly adds to favourites*

dadenko In reply to phaeryface [2006-06-11 20:40:25 +0000 UTC]

Thanks for your comments. The key for me getting smooth with WC is to build up your pigments with several washes, even if it's building a base of the same colour. You get way more control than sloshing down and dawbing up. It takes longer, more cig breaks. I like your self portrait. Be patient with yourself. No one learns to paint overnight. Your work is of a different style than mine but if you'd like move into more realistic work I've no doubt you can, with patience and asking questions of any artists who do the things you'd like to try. I am at your disposal if you have any questions. E-mail me. Take care, David

Thanks, The control I'm given sometimes amazes me too. Let's give credit where credit is due. I'm only the human element involved here. I'm happy to have been so gifted, although it's often a struggle sometimes,(food, rent, etc.), I'd not trade my artistic lot in life for anything. It thrills me if anyone gets any pleasure or insight from this thing entrusted me.

I hope to do more of them in the future. There's something really satisfying about them. I love that they're 'portable' too. I dig travel and sometimes decide before leaving if it's a camera trip or a watercolour trip. Thanks for the cudos,--- David

Thank you so very much. It struck me as elegant too, more so than I ever intended it to be. I guess there's something to be said for simple. I clog my work up sometimes and mean to work on changing that as I mature as a painter. David

You're too kind. As I mentioned, I got lucky here and I don't work with them the way they're intended to be worked with. Perhaps what you're seeing is the only good result of fighting your tools the way I sometimes am stubborn enough to do. Thank you for the praise. ----D
