OMG the Kanids have arrived!!

While the cats and pigs of earth adapted well to the timeless world, the dogs endured a much more chaotic and painful process that left them biologically and mentally unstable. Eventually, they grew into the terrifying Kanids - towering were-hounds with virtually no technology but the gifts of strength and durability well beyond any human. Abandoning their former masters completely, the newly evolved Kanid people claimed their own territories in the vast desert wastelands to the northeast. There they reverted to their ancestral pack-hierarchy system, eventually expanding it into the primitive beginnings of a social civilization.

The Kanid Caste System For individual Kanids, everything about them is predetermined by genetics. Like their canine ancestors, Kanids are born in large litters (almost always 10), but the amount of nutrients and hormones is divided unevenly among them in-utero. This causes great variation in their development, will determine the course of their entire lives. Most will be simple-minded laborers and fighters. A few will be more cunning and mature. Even fewer will be fully-developed Alphas, physically and mentally superior to the others.

Latran Caste: more commonly referred to as 'Jackals,' the Latran caste are the grunt laborers and hunters that obey the higher castes unquestioningly and revere them as their rightful leaders. 9 out of every 10 pups will be born into this caste, and will generally grow to a height of 8 feet and appear tan or light gray in color. Jackals are unable to breed. They regenerate very fast, have extreme agility, and are very strong, but they possess only a primitive intelligence.

Vulpine Caste: as their named would imply, Kanids of this caste are fox-like in nature, with slightly less physical strength and resilience than the Jackals, but with significantly greater intelligence. 1 in 10 pups will be a Vulpine, and serve as crafters, scouts, and pack leaders. Their lesser strength is more than made up for by their superior intelligence, as they can use more lethal weapons and tactics when in battle.

Lupine Caste: the greatest of the Kanids are the wolf-like Lupines, who possess both intelligence and physical power far greater than that of the other castes. 1 in 100 pups will be a Lupine, and they shall eventually rule over the other castes as the almighty Alphas.

Types of Kanids:

The Hunters: can be male or female, with little to no difference in their appearance or ability. Hunters act as both general laborers in a kanid warren and as pack-hunting raiders that scour the deserts in search of animals or travelers. An accelerated healing factor gives the kanids a major advantage in melee combat, and while they lack dexterity, intelligence, or advanced weapons, they can easily wreak havoc on caravans and settlements with their merciless savagery. They can stand on two legs and tower over humans and felinians, or drop to all fours and run across the sands with terrifying speed. As if this weren't already bad enough, kanids are phenomenal diggers, and can tunnel through the dry soil in subterranean stealth-attacks. Few things are as horrifying as seeing a pack of wild kanids burst through the sands and leap onto a passing convoy, or hearing the hunters' ominous howls in the distance as they begin to track your telltale scent.

The Matriarchs: are known to the people of Tranquillus only in legend, for only the most foolishly brave have managed to catch a glimpse of these monstrous titans. Females are rarer than males in kanid society, and most females are born into the Latran Caste where they never develop reproductive capacity. However, a select few will be born into the Vulpine caste and grow into monstrous Matriarchs nearly twice the size of their male counterparts. They are highly aggressive leaders with superior intelligence, but they are also nurturing mothers who give birth and raise litters of 10 pups at a time. Young kanids grow up extremely fast, so a single Matriarch can produce new batches of hunters at alarming rates. They spend most of their time underground in the elaborate nursery warrens, feasting on carcasses brought to them by the hunters and birthing a never-ending volume of new kanids.

The Alphas: hail from the prestigious Lupine caste, and possess a strategic intelligence on par with an intellectual human's (but their lack of reliance on verbal language still limits their ability to communicate with the other sentient races fluently). They are essentially superior in every way to the lower Castes, and represent what the entire Kanid race aspires to be like. The typical male Alpha is nine feet of height or taller, and they stand straight up on two legs all the time, letting them tower over their subordinates. The female Alpha is much rarer than the male - but is also much larger, stronger, and smarter. Alphas can breed amongst themselves, but are not nearly as efficient as the prolific Vulpine Caste. They can only produce 1 or 2 offspring at a time which grow slower, but always develop into Alphas like their parents.
