I tried to do a recording once but I just ended up with a very low res recording that I didn't like. I'm not a video editor, so I don't really know the first thing about ending up with a good quality recording. Is there something that is simple enough to use and free? Heh, I need a tutorial on making a video on a tutorial.

Depends on yours OS. I use linux Mint and the best screen recorder for me so far is SimpleScreenRecorder: www.maartenbaert.be/simplescre… .

On windows I used camstudio (www.hongkiat.com/blog/win-scre… .
The effect is similar to: www.youtube.com/watch?v=2VG7cS… (I've captured a game, but sound didn't work...)

I've got full HD, so my screen is 1920x1280, so I usually capture only YouTube 720p (~1280x720). So it gives me some free space off screen to keep some references not visible on finished video, etc. And my CPU is only 2,5GHz, so it's better to capture smaller areas.
And that would be it. SSR creates pretty small mp4-s, but sometimes I use Kdenlive (linux version) to edit final move.
