I would have some shadows going across the sword, and perhaps a bit of reflection of the trees around it... nothing really solid, just a tinge of the colors, something like that so it has more depth and doesn't look as flat. As for the leg warmer thingies... I would mayne do a bit of a dry brush effect on them, make them look a tad bit fuzzier. Lastly, perhaps a bit more shadow to his left arm (on our right), a bit cooler and darker such as you have on his pants.

I love what you have going with the sky and the trees... the grass looks great too.

Your stuff is always great Dan. I love your attention to subtle details when it comes to laying down colors. Good stuff mate.

I hope my feedback helps you out.

the sword look awesome, great job getting the metal look on it. As for the snow in there, you could add some watter droplets, since the scene is becoming spring and there's little snow, you could add some melting snow drops along the tree trunks.

Master Danimation ...what would I advise? What would I point out?
Only that the little details ...like the one in the background ...in the trees ...is a pretty cool thing, and that you should do more cool things in your pictures

anyway ...great pic

I think my favorite part of this piece so far is the snow on the trees. The golds of the sky and background are absolutely beautiful. Honestly, I have no crits. I see nothing worth pointing out. I can't wait to see this finished, hon... oh, and I love the little shadowed figure on the tree in the bg. That made my day. It looks so good so far.

I love the awesome contrast between the warm orangey sky and the cool snow on green grass. Yummy contrasts make this pic terriffic! :3
Not to mention the perspective on the blade is amazingly hard to pull off!

Sorry to add more, but I just noticed that the tree directly to the right of Zabuza (from the viewers angle), is much closer to the foreground than the other trees, yet when you inspect them higher up they all seem very close to each other.

Oh, and I LOVE the warm colors you have going on here, the orange yellow tint in the sunlight just give a much more welcoming feeling .

I love how you've captured that seemingly harsh (as in bright, high contrast), sort of forest lighting. I wouldn't have remembered to do that, if I were to do this piece. Love the warm tones. As others have said, the camouflage is sort of flat-looking. A little more difference in the trees would help. THey all seem on the same plane. Darkening the lower part of the sword would help increase the effect more, but thats a matter of personal opinion I suppose... The snow looks kind of akward, not being round, but more rectangular if you know what I mean. Placing Haku right above Zabuza creates a little too much symmetry and sort of splits the picture in half, but he'd be difficult to move around now. The tree on the left hand side of the picture, behind Zabuza seems to be sort of missing a little oomph!, if you need more clarification feel free to ask. Theres one flat green grass area ( the highest one, and one flat sky area, (the right-most one) where it seems to be sort of block shading. Otherwise, it's a great pic! . (more contrast in the sword, if you ask me tho!! )

I think his neck and shoulders look fine, it adds more to to the fact that it's prolly rough holding that up (look's like he's cringing under the weight)
The detail is wonderful, espesially looking upclose and seeing the fur on his arms and feet actually is fuzzy. the shading is wonderful, although... while there is much light on him there is no light hitting the trees behind him...... but that's just me there probably wouldn't be much obvious light considering the angle of the lightsource, but with thinking that it seems like he would be fight out of reach of the tree's shading........... but thinking about alllll that just makes my head hurt so the lights fine.

though if you look at his top hand the ... gah what should i call them... the fuzzy arm things are covering up the back of his hand a little much... whereas the elastic would probably rest at the wrist so it would have needed extra arm space.

another thing is that the background trees are all too similar in size... it looks like (the three very back ones) are all the same size and distance away, and just that makes the branch with haku on it look odd as it underlaps

and if i haven't already said WAAAAAYYY too much and given too much stuff thats way too in detail.... well... there's one last thing... it seems like there should be more big bumpy random roots on the ground (because it you've ever been in a place like that and avoided tripping then i congradulate you.)

I need to apoligise tho... with all the stuff i've said i'm not near as good an artist to even start critiquing your work... so i apoligise profusely *bows* I'm sorry. this picture is beautiful beyond comparison... so much so that i looked at it for so long that i noticed these things to critique on. I love everything about this picture especially the detail... and seeing the little leafy tree sprouts in the grass.

*bows in apoligy and amazement*

the coloring is fantastic so far, nice touch with haku in the background. the sword looks so bad ass. the grass texture rocks too.
but what bothers me are the hands.
when you grip something at an angle your fingers tend to seperate and pop out more. the seem too flat and static to me.
and zabuza is grey isnt he?
any who, great pic.

That forest just feels entirely too warm. Makes the characters seem really out of place with the setting... unless, of course, this is a forest IN HELL.

Seriously. Was this pallet necessary? Because, like, I really feel it in my brain that this should be in blue hues...
But then, I suck at coloring... that's why I don't do it.

Other than that, I think this is solid. The sword and handle issue looks trivial to me. It's a bigass sword... the bigass handle would be used for leverage I guess. (?)
But again, it just seems like a non-issue to me. this is hot. Can't wait to see it finished.

ah phenomenal colours as usual dan.......hmm but for a crit....the hands look a little plain and the shoulder shouldnt be up so high .....the reason i say this is because if you watch the anime zabuza can hold his sword out steady with one arm (because hes so strong i think).

i suck at crits...

But besides that....First rate!

not crazy about the texture used on the blade... it looks like the ocean from a helicopter,
but i guess it looks... cool.
and i'm sure no one else sees it that way.
and his left leg (thigh bone) looks a bit long, and lower leg a bit too short,
in comparison to the other leg...
but that could just be me...

about the job, Im not sure about the sword's texture. If it is roughy, then the border between the edge and the rest shouldnt be so sharpie.

I'd have to say, that addition of the BG made it at least 20x better. Looking up and up the trees, your eye is pulled with the magnificent changes in hue, and then you see Haku up there! How badass is that ?

You colored this one pretty quickly, and it turned out pretty nice as well. The problems with the arms seem less apparent with the coloring, but you can still see Zabuza's neck/shoulder problem. It's hard to fix things once they're already drawn out, though.

Amazing job, which I know you're very used to hearing

shermanCG In reply to shermanCG [2004-11-23 01:12:28 +0000 UTC]

Not to put our levels to the same, here, but I've drawn characters how you do a lot as well. Using a reference photo (even a snapshot of yourself) in the same position wil show that you've got quite a bit of neck showing in such a position.

Being scrunched down like that protrays more of a defensive position, and Zabuza is everything but that ;D. The only way to really explain what I'm saying is looking at a photo.

I sent you a note of some annotation/advice on the photo. I thought it'd be more proper to send it in private. Hope it helps!

First I must say... you are an amazing colourist. My only crit would be to make the hands a bit more dynamic if you don't mind more work. Like make his right index finger not so curled up. does this make any sense? I'm just nitpicking for your sake though. Either way this rocks and this is one sick fanart.
