Some have commented about the ambiguity: which printer is printing those files?

The solution is simple: remove the line separator betweeen the printer and its files.

No, we'll be doing our indicator work for the Luna +1 cycle.

+1 is 1.0 ?

"Luna +1" just means the next version. So "0.3" [link]

Also, how about screwing the current printer status into there aswell? (Printing/Processing/Off/Out of Paper/Paper Jam/No Ink/Printer Open etc. Its very simple as it is now, but when printing documents, its usually helpful to know what the printer is actually doing (because so much can go wrong). But I dont know how you'd do that (it just looks so awesome I dont wanna think about even touching it!)

Ha, you had a very cool idea. I only put it to high-fidelity form.

I'm confused. Which printer will print the two documents? Are the two documents supposed to be visually associated with the "Photosmart" heading? What do the on/off switches do?

*Using a printer's human-readable name given at setup (if any) would make sense.
*Small progress bar on each document like app icon progress bars

It should be noted that printer management sucks on at least Windows. (Idk if the following is applies to Linux, but probably.) Especially with networked printers- they show up even if you're not connected to the printer's network. It would make sense to have a default for each network meaning the computer doesn't even try to print to my home printer when I'm at the beach house, etc. Also, discovering printers when connecting to a network and displaying them as options in a print dialog would be nice. Auto-setup when possible but if the user needs to provide some input that would be requested after the user tries to print to that printer.

Printer setup on Linux is currently very confusing- it mentions Samba and some other technical stuff I can't remember.

Of course this would require major developer effort, but printers can be a hassle and I don't think they're disappearing soon, though I really want them to.

I like the idea of a progress bar. That would be great, as well as the human readable name. The Lone Printer

Printer management sucks bad. I know my mother and father are not very technology literate (though my mother is many times better than my dad) find printers confusing when handling multiple documents. That was the initial inspiration for this mockup. An easy to understand, queue with the file icon.

In the original idea I posted, instead of the on/off it was a counter showing showing how many documents were being printed.

Very nice. Drag and drop would be a bit weird because the indicator should close when you click on a file to drag it. Would be a brilliant idea though

I imagine you could drag a file to the icon and it would show the menu, but tbh I don't think anyone tries to print from the file browser do they?

The extra complexity and arguably unease of discoverability for what is probably a corner case seem a bit muchβ€”this from someone who did it all the time back when he used Windows. Additionally, I thought indicators were for indicating, not doing (though all of the other indicators in the panel are for doing, not indicating).

DanRabbit In reply to zpletan [2012-05-30 18:18:46 +0000 UTC]

Well if indicators only indicated I think they wouldn't have menus at all, right? They usually indicate the state of the system (connected to wifi? got enough battery? Sound too loud? Syncing? Printing?) and offer a way to alter that state.

I like that explanation.

The first time someone goes to print and the print indicator shows up, they are almost certain to click it. When they do they'll see the [Drag To Print] thing. From there on they will know that they can just drag the file to the indicator and drop it into the printer they want to print.

OKβ€”sorry. Went back and looked at the original mockup with its "Drag files here" bit. However, it would make sense that the indicator only shows up when things are printing. I can't think why I should see it if nothing is printing, and DnD seems, as I said before, like only a corner case. If it were hidden unless printing, then, I would have to open and print something before I could DnD files to print, defeating the purpose. I like the concept, just can't figure out how it should work (maybe that's why I'm the commenter instead of the designer).
