However, I think these steps are pretty random and it's totally up to the picture which values you set on the different layers/filters. It's simply a matter of sense

Well, the easiest way is to apply a new layer (ctrl+alt+shift+E)and then hit (ctrl+shift+U).
But my favorite way is through making a new gradient map layer of black and white.
