I don't get this, I can't get the control + y to work, it just makes everything outlined and my reference picture disappears. What am I doing wrong?

this is neat and very helpful , can i ask a stupid question though? if i want to change where a line touches the end of the shape how do you do that without warping the shape? and is it possible to make a circle to fill in the middle or side of the shape that does not touch the walls of the shape? like if i wanted to do a radial gradient sorta thing but it would be more an irregular shape how would i get the lines not to touch the sides. sorry for the crazy questions, im really trying to understand this tool lol
