Great Mouse Detective - Basil and Professor RatiganMay I recommend an awesome AMV?
[link]
May I also say I'm amused by Ratigan's nonchalance here? Jus going "Oh really? SMOKE IN YO FACE."
Also got to say...OTP of the movie. Which is weird, seeing as my favorite Sherlock Holmes pairing is Watson/Holmes. Dawson, why me no ship you and Basil??
Ooooh well.

Been reading thru all the replies on this, and stuff...
But yeah- I totally LOVE this movie. It seriously bugs me that Disney totally overlooks it. There is just... no excuse.
The whole Basil/Dawson idea always seemed obvious to me. This pairing... not so much. BUT... I actually find it very interesting. It's no Doof/Perry, though.
Damn, I just got a weird image of Ratigan cornering Basil in a dark alley, behind a dumpter, going "THWART ME, BASIL..." And Basil just rolls his eyes and walks away, and Basil's all "Basil, you get back here and thwart me this instant!"

No, Doof/Perry I can see them growing old together. Ratigan and Basil? No, their romance isn't fluffy. they don't even have the crazy love that Quacky and Megs have. This is a relationship built on pure lust, hate, and wanting to dominate the other. To win their ultimate cat and mouse chase. This is just one of my seedier pairings, while I usually prefer something with more love in it...Like Like honestly, how Dawson and Basil would be. Or heck, even Doof and Perry have more love for each other! And they are also enemies.
But Ratigan and Basil...it's so dark...it's so delicious. I can't help it!
The movie is so adult while not being adult. They actually give their audience credit. Which is partly why I love it so much. Not only for the characters, but for how deep they went. It really is a shame that they seem to want to bury it...
Aaand to be fair...I could see ratigan getting frustrated if basil ignored him. he's a drama and attention hog. He would actually snatch him as he's trying to get away and slam Basil into the wall. "Don't you DARE ignore me you little maggot. Don't you see I'm talking to you? No be a dear and PAY ATTENTION!"

When Basil first makes his appearance in the film (bursting through the door with a gun, in his terrifying disguise, scaring the shit out of poor Dawson and Oliva), didn't he scream "I SHALL HAVE HIM!!"?

I tend to get the urge to watch this movie every year. It's like my brain is telling me "Disney forgot it...DONT YOU!" Not that I'm complaining. Loooove this movie.
There is actually quite a bit of fanart for GMD...But it's mostly of the same poses of Basil and Ratigan over and over again. Reference is one thing...But people need to stop copying.
And slash happens in almost every movie. It's just my job to find it.

WingsOfASong [2012-08-15 03:17:33 +0000 UTC]
Yep, that sums it up. XD Ratigan is totally Basil's ex. It was kind of hinted at, and Ratigan is fairly touchy-feely around Basil...*uncomfortable* The movie is badass.
AND OH MY GOD, I am SO glad you don't ship Basil and Jailba- I mean, Olivia! It's just wrong. Age her all you want, shippers. She's still six years old.
π: 0 β©: 1
DarkwingSnark In reply to WingsOfASong [2012-08-15 04:05:42 +0000 UTC]
I actually have no problem with age gaps. It's more the fact I imagine, after the movie, they all kind of stayed in touch. Like Dawson getting letters and photos, and reads them aloud. and then visits from time to time...So Basil would forever see her as his little kid he rescued. Olivia is the daughter he'd never have.
Like I told someone else, uncle material.
Plus...Even I can't think of her past six. Even when I see the aged up pics of her, and then a Basil that looks EXACTLY THE SAME. It makes no sense. I might even be more forgiven of the pairing, if it wasn't for this.
But meh. as long as they like it, it's all gooooood~
As for Basil/Ratigan... Basil needs to quote brokeback mountain.
Basil: "I wish I knew how to quit you.Sobs glare growls."

WingsOfASong In reply to DarkwingSnark [2012-08-15 04:30:03 +0000 UTC]
I don't mind the uncle part of the relatioship either. That's adorable. It's the "OMG Olivia is hot now, I must be in love" relationship. I never see Basil having one (except for possibly Ratigan or a mouse Irene Adler if he's straigt)
XDD Exactly. The two balence out each other's craziness. Ratigan's got a crapload of it.

DarkwingSnark In reply to WingsOfASong [2012-08-15 04:55:42 +0000 UTC]
I'm honestly surprised Miss Kitty isn't the go to gal, before Olivia. Not that I'm a fan of her being shipped with Basil, but it is at least...ya know, not pedo. But I'm with you on Irene Adler mouse. Adler was the only woman that Holmes was intrigued and attracted to. Like with Moriarty, she was one of the only ones who could match wits...and BEAT him. I think Basil would be into that too. He hates to be second rate...and yet he falls for those that can best him. Brotha has a thing for large brains, yo.
Though...there are't many people that can. Besides the potential for Dawson/Basil, I can't see him falling for anyone else. Normal people bore and tire him.
π: 0 β©: 1
WingsOfASong In reply to DarkwingSnark [2012-08-15 05:03:55 +0000 UTC]
Exactly my point. He's not attracted to those who are pretty and are in distress (So many OCs do this, and it gets really irritating really fast). He wants someone to challenge him. To outsmart him, and offer him stimulation, not to mother and love on him. He hasn't got time for that sort of nonsense. There are cases to be solved, dammit. XD
Right you are. I'm not sure if the same goes for Ratigan or not. Though he could be capable of romance being the manipulative rat bastard he is. He could fake an emotion and use the hell out of it to get his way. Dawson/Basil is one awesome bromance.
π: 0 β©: 1
DarkwingSnark In reply to WingsOfASong [2012-08-15 05:21:32 +0000 UTC]
Ratigan is full of himself. It seems natural he would romanticize over someone who is almost as obsessed about Ratigan as Ratigan is. LOL I can see him feeding off of that.
But I also think he would use love/lust as a way to show his dominance.I can see him loving the fact he can emotionally wrap someone around his finger. That he could be the one to get Basil to break or soar, depending on his mood. And I see that in his mind Basil is HIS. Whether it's romantic or not, it's up to you. Yet if someone else were to kill the detective...I can see him throwing fit and killing whoever did it. and tjen telling everyone to leave him be, as he goes off and mourns.

WingsOfASong In reply to DarkwingSnark [2012-08-15 05:41:57 +0000 UTC]
I can see that about him too, the crazy sonofabitch. In his mind, he owns Basil. Basil is the only one who "understands him" as he may see it. He is a dominant character, really. Movie-wise, the guy steals the show (and having Vincent Price's doom vocals helped a lot).
He'd shut himself up somewhere and refuse to come out if that ever happened, probably. The guy is SUCH a drama queen. XD That's partly why I love him.
So very vain, and has every reason to be so. Ratigan is made of fabulous.
π: 0 β©: 1
DarkwingSnark In reply to WingsOfASong [2012-08-15 14:51:57 +0000 UTC]
I was thinking about it, wondering if Ratigan was the type to kill himself if someone else were to kill Basil. To have no more ultimate foe. (No one can ever be as smart as him.) And I was quick to realize he wouldn't. Again, it's because he loves himself too much. Also the fact that the drama queen in him would be more ampt to sulking and sighing as he stares up at a large portrait of Basil. Not as big as the one of HIM, mind you, but still pretty big. And probably full of holes from where he has thrown darts at it. He probably talks to it. Sometimes lamenting, other times yelling.
Question is...would he go crazy enough to have hallucinations of him? Like start believing he was there with him and share dinners and stuff.
Wow...I'm getting fanfic ideas. LOL. stop me!

LOL I was surprised when I saw this. It's actually kind of ironic, because I just recently watched the movie. I kind of forgot just how much I love Basil. I blame it on Disney for completely ignoring this movie.
As for the pairings: I would have to agree with you. Basil/Olivia is way too.....uncle vibe, as you put it. You're right, she's far too young. If anything, I see more of a protective quality coming from Basil. It's even showed in the movie at some points. I can easily see Basil/Dawson. Though, again, you're right, they haven't known each other very long. But something could develop between them.
Basil/Ratigan? I'll be honest, I've never given it too much of a thought, but I really like the idea of it. It's a love/hate situation. They love to hate each other. An obsession.
This turned out great! You really captured the style of the movie!

I'm inside your head, touching your stuff.
I'll forever love Ratigan. Buuuut...rewatching it...Basil reminds me of Moonie in so many ways, that it makes me so happy and I can't help but love him too.
And I STILL don't get why Disney forgets about his movie...It as drama,is hilarious, and the characters are so likable! AND THE VOICES! As or the animation, I can jus tell that everybody had fun working on it.
Plus my inner pervert likes the bar scene. Not many cartoon with stripteases...besides porn...but still.
I ship Dawson/Basil too. Just from the movie alone, it's too soon. I would LOVE if something would grow just like Sherlock and Watson's relationship. Dawson flatters is ego by asking questions and being impressed by Basil's wit; But Basil NEEDS Dawson. For those days when depression hits, and he gets in a funk, Dawson can whip it out of him.And he can also make sure the other rodent eats, and bring him back to the world.
Yes, a lovely and healthy relationship. <3

Oh, I thought I felt things moving around up there in my head. It's you touching my stuff.
It all makes sense now.
Basil has always been my favorite character from the movie, ever since I can remember. Ratigan? I believe there was once a time when I was scared of him a little. lol Yes, the animation is classic and the voices are spot on. Is it just me, or is it the same VA who does Scrooge McDuck's voice who's playing Olivia's father? I think so. It sounds familiar.
Yes, I think Dawson/Basil is a very realistic, very healthy relationship. Hence the reason I ship it

The first half of the movie was basically Basil talking about how awful Ratigan was, and yet complimenting him the whole time. He was fanboying/getting boners during it. And then Ratigan was feeling up Basil as he was showing off how he beat him...
yeah.I noticed it all right. LOL

As much as I absolutely love Great Mouse Detective (Seriously Disney, where's the theater re-release of that?!), I really don't support any of the GMD pairings (I think the main ones are BasilxRatigan -which is pretty obvious I'll admit- and BasilxOlivia. I've seen/read art/fanfics for both and I just can't get into any of them. Oh well.) Although Basil and Dawson is a good brOTP x3
Nevertheless, this is a great picture. The expressions are spot on (I'm amused by Ratigan's nonchalance too XD) and just perfect. As for the shading/shadows/colors.... just, holy crap. You really captured the feel of the film when it comes to all these things (You're so good at backgrounds... and expressions.... and everything).
So yeah, really awesome Darkwing

Olivia/Basil freaks me out. She's like, six years old. Or something. Even making her older, it would give too many creepy uncle vibes. And trust me, i have too many creepy uncles in my life to evn want to try and handle it in fiction.
And honestly...i don't remember ever reading a good Basil/Ratigan fic. But I tend to be a big enemy shipper, so it seemed obvious to me. Basil just met Dawson for there to really be much of a pairing (besides a beginning of a growing bromance), so really Ratigan is the main man of his life. The one he is obsessed with, always trying to catch. he one person who can outsmart him. it's infuriating! It's maddening! It's an unhealthy obsession. But Basil isn't the only one. Ratigan has only been foiled by Basil. He's used to having his way, and here is this brilliant mouse who will play with him. Who tells him "no", and has the will to actually stop him. It's a never ending game for them. Like Batman and Joker, they are two different sides of the same coin. They will be the end of each other.
...
Is it weird I find that pretty hot and romantic? LOL
As for the rest you said, thank you! To be honest, i just kinda slapped stuff together. I just knew I wanted their rivalry to come across, even in the colors. and keeping it simple just didnt fit it.
And Ratigan just loves how spunky Basil is. How confident he is in his brains and victory, that he can just sit there as Basil tries to rough him up. Which is kind of stupid, seeing how Ratigan is a freaken GIANT.
RUN BASIL, RUN!

Yeah, when I first saw the BasilxOlivia pairing (I think she was a teen) I was just like "Wha...? But, he's still way older than her. I...wha?"
And yes, the explanation you gave was spot on. Wow, they really are like Batman and the Joker.
And yes, simple wouldn't really work for these two, lol.
Again, great job It's always nice to meet another friend who loves this movie (I only know one other person who's watched it, but my other friends don't even remember it
