i'm glad you found it useful - as for your question, you'll have to elaborate XD Do you mean taking photos of the commission, or doing photos as the commission?

That's great! But how should I do it? Do I follow the same things like your guide? can you give me some ideals of a price?

Hrm, for photographs, i'm not too sure, it's not one i've attempted XD I'd suggest finding some other photographers and talking to them about what they charge ^^ just about everything else can still be guide-followed :3

I honestly think my art is at an okay level (as in far from the very best but still very much acceptable and decent), but my school's band desperately needs money to make it to an event outstation. So is it okay if I started taking commissions? And is it okay if I tell them why I need the money though it isn't art-related?

Also, I have no idea how Paypal works. And I just want to know how fast can you start accepting payment (if it's half a payment)?

And just to be sure, when you say "decent understanding of anatomy" do you mean that it has near perfect anatomy or no obvious mistake? And when you say "clean and smooth, not wobbly" lineart, do you mean that the lineart has to be absolutely perfect or is it okay if there are tiny little imperfections? At first I thought professional-level when you said these things but when you mentioned "the average 10-year-old" I thought that you meant someone that doesn't prioritize art at all.

I would appreciate it greatly if you would answer my questions! And sorry that there are so many of them. Thanks again for making this great guide!

XD it's fine to take commissions for non-art-related reasons, why wouldn't it? It's like any other job :3 your money can be used whatever way you want. Paypal's pretty easy.. you just give your paypal e-mail address to the person you want to pay you. they can log into their paypal and send a payment directly to your paypal email address and it shows up in your paypal inbox :3 that's it. from there you can use a paypal debit card to use your money, have paypal send you checks in the mail, or link it directly to your bank account and just transfer the money over :3 it's really very little hassle. Once your paypal account is created and verified you can recieve/send payments right away ^^... my decent understand of anatomy phrase just means that you can't have wildly disproportionate people (like you see kindergarteners drawing). your people must look like people. mistakes are fine, no one's perfect, but it should be recognizable, and hopefully not awkward. Your anatomy is just fine ^^ clean, smooth, not wobbly: if you're hand drawing your lines, some imperfections are just a given ^^ but it shouldn't look like you tried to draw with with your toes. There's no excuse for wiggly/broken lines when so many free art programs are available that do perfectly clean lines with minimal effort XD the general guideline to keep in mind is : you must draw better than -someone- if you don't know a single person who draws worse than you, then you probably aren't ready for commissions XD, if you can think of several, you're probably fine :3 that means your artwork is better than the average person's off the street - so someone will be interested in buying it.

Thank you so much for taking the time to reply me! Your reply have been a great help to me. I feel much more ready for commissions now.

Just wondering, when is the right time to ask for payment if you want them to pay half the price before completing the art?

Again, thanks a lot!

DarlingMionette In reply to AngHuiQing [2011-10-23 14:54:24 +0000 UTC]

just ask upfront XD I require all my payment before I'll even begin working on a piece, and i've never had anyone complain yet. just make sure you put it in your commission rules and no one will be surprised :3

Thank you so much again for your reply. I don't know anyone who responds to every single one of their commentors when they have to many messages to look through.

I'm just wondering if it's okay if you took a look at my commission info. it's perfectly fine if you don't want to. Afterall, everyone has a life. Here's the link if you're kind enough to though: [link]

awwies you're very welcome. LOL I do respond to all my messages (as long as there's something to say.. I won't drag a series of notes on FOREVER) lol. Honestly it's fun to talk to all my watchers and make new friends :3 so I don't even mind how many I get . I did a look-over of your commission info and it looks just fine now you just need some more examples! So get to doing some new art :3 It came across as very personable and friendly

I don't mind (and in fact love) how many comments I get too. It's nice to know that when there's such better art out there, your's capture someone's attention long enough that they'd comment.

Wow, thanks! Yeah, I need more examples. XD I'll get at it when I can. I'm surprisingly busy this week (totally swamped). Again, thanks.

I have a question (and perhaps stupid one):

If i am commissioned, when i finish the commission, do i have to mail the person the drawing, send them a copy of the drawing (computer file) or is it as the commissioner wants? Cause I'm thinking about starting to take commissions but i feel like having to mail the drawing would be an issue, since i would probably be commissioned by people overseas.
Thanks in advance

👍: 0 ⏩: 1

DarlingMionette In reply to Talexior [2011-09-13 14:03:15 +0000 UTC]

It all just depends upon what you agreed on. For instance, I do purely digital media, I don't send hardcopies via snail mail - it's written clearly on my commission page, so when I'm done with a commission, I generally upload it here, and send the link to my commissioner via note. If you're doing more traditional media or want to send prints, then I'd suggest that you note your commissioner when you're going to ship, and then send it off on it's way, that way they know to expect it :3 It's up to you to decide how you want to send your work, just make sure your commissioner knows how it'll be given to them

Every so often I find myself contemplating commission work online; I've never actually scanned anything in or posted it on my account, yadda yadda... this is a great reminder, I think, of just how seriously unprepared I am for commission work online- but it also gives me some very precise goals to work toward, and I appreciate that. Thanks for the candid, honest advice on this process! It's not everyone who's willing to give their competition a leg up.
