Description As promised, a painting tutorial using Ten Points from Gryffindor as an example. I hope this will be of some help, and that it's not simply a case of the blind leading the blind. I'm sorry for rambling - once I start it's kind of hard to get me to stop - and I promise the other tutorial(s) I have planned won't be half as long (or soporific).

So now you would be in Far's Desithified friends group?

He stole my cup making it impossible to dunk cookies, so I don't care what group he stuffs me in. As long as I'm with you on the Light Side.

Very useful, food for thought, and all that!

On a sidenote: crucial difference between Corel Photopaint and Corel Paintshop (for me at least): in the higher versions of Pain(t)shop, essential tools like smudge have been restricted to a natural media-type layer to which you can't copy or convert. Which makes it useless for me when it comes to working on older material or in fact anything that hasn't been produced on that very type of layer. Corel Photopaint (X3) non-commercial edition would be sort of okay for me, if it allowed me to work on it longer than 10 minutes and to open and save files. (Saving files, ha! Users think they can ask anything from software these days...)
Clearly someone on the Corel software dpt. is hell-bent on driving us all to Adobe.

But even in GIMP, Photoshop Elements 6 or Paintshop 7 your tutorial is the bee's knees.

Thanks!

I'd have replied to the technical part, but I see that =WraithTen has beaten me to it. If I ever write one of these again (no promises), would you consent to 'beta'ing it (trying it out on your programme)? I hadn't realised how vastly different these paint programmes were.

=WraithTen has been quite helpful, although she'll probably deny it.
The essence of your tutorial is not tied-in with the technicalisties of the different programmes and I found my self applying some of its ideas as soon as I read it, but of course I'd love to beta your next tutorial! Thanks again!

I use Paintshop XI and, so far, I've been able to do everything he talks about. I don't really understand the problem you're having but I can try to help if you want.

Oh, I don't want to criticise Darthfar's excellent tutorial - and I'm sure you'll have a lot of benefit from it using Paintshop XI.
But PSP XI really drives me nuts. I can't use smudge and other brushes on a raster layer (and I use smudge a lot). I've tried to settle for using the drawing material layer and then I get the message that I can't use the airbrush, or the eraser. This really drives me mad: there is no such problem on PSP7: you can use smudge, eraser, airbrush whatever you like on its raster layer. Worse, there's also no way to copy or open anything into this new drawing material layer. New versions of a program should give you more opportunities, not limit you in your possibilities. If you have a way around this or if its different in PSP XII, please tell me.
Of course I could stick with PSP7, but it's fileformat gets less and less supported by other programs, and its layer management is very clumsy. And ultimately, I dread the moment where I'll fire up a new version of windows or a new PC and it won't work anymore.

No worries, it doesn't sound like you're putting down the tut. He wanted this to work for everyone and I told him it did, so now I feel bad. I've put Far through so many nightmares with all my different painting programs, and we've found that PSP is the closest to his PP.

I agree with you on the smudge, that drives me nuts too and I think Far gets his jollies from that because he doesn't want me to use it, I used it all the time with Painter, LOL. But I don't have the other problems you're talking about. I can use all the other tools with the raster layers or even the original sketch. Am I missing something? I've had the colors not show up when I forgot to change the opacity on the sketch layer or forgotten to increase the color depth, but I've never gotten a message that I couldn't use the tools. I'm so helpful...

TheMysteriousK In reply to WraithTen [2008-02-07 23:14:32 +0000 UTC]

Hm, maybe I should give it another go, totally ignoring the Drawing Material Layer (I'm not sure if it's called exactly that, I'm on a different language version). I found myself trying to do without the Dodge and Burn brushes totally and reducing smudge as much as possible, because I want to expand to natural media eventually and it seemed better to do everything with unchanged colours.

I do think the tutorial is for everyone, it's really about the painting and not about things like menus and shortcuts - I've been using some of the ideas today already and there's a lot more for the future.

I hope you get it working for you. I'm glad to help, although it seems I'm not very helpful, lol.

I'm glad you're finding it useful. It's hard to learn digital painting without getting some understanding of the programs, but there is SO much to learn, yikes!

TheMysteriousK In reply to WraithTen [2008-02-08 13:11:42 +0000 UTC]

I got it working!
It turned out I had to set the setting for new pictures down to 8bit per channel. (Yes, that 256 shades, but it's 256 shades of the R, G or B, not of the total colours. A little knowledge is a dangerous thing.) This made both airbrush, brush, whatever available.
And the smudge we all know and love, and that you and I have been missing, is a sub-option of a button on the toolbar that two buttons below the eraser (at least on my toolbar). To make it easier. it's also called "Smudge" (at least in my language), just like the useless evil twin brother Smudge for the drawing material layer (may it burn in hell) on the toplevel of the toolbar. :-/

*Tosses useless GIMP in the bin*

I'm as happy as a puppy. It must have taken me years to move on from PSP7, but now I'm painting away in PSP XI like I've been there forever. [link]
I wasn't quite right about the place of "Smudge" (in fact it's two places below the Clone button, not below the eraser), but let me know if you need help finding it.

That's great, it really looks like you're comfortable with the program. Excellent!

I found smudge but I'm trying to work without it, giving Far a chance to prove me wrong.

No, seriously, if you knew how often I got bogged down trying update versions of PSP and other programs, and now suddenly it feels like I've been using anything else.

>I found smudge but I'm trying to work without it, giving Far a chance to prove me wrong.<
Darn, for once in my life I had hoped to sabotage an educational program... but you're right, it's good if we try to rise to challenges, whether they come from others or ourselves. I try to restrict smudge to particular cases lately.

ShrunkenJedi In reply to DarthFar [2008-02-09 12:08:06 +0000 UTC]

Yeah, Well, I usually have to keep it to 1000*1000 or less to keep it under control, so I can't do too much of the resizing downward... it's why I went to Illustrator to make the one piece (plus variations) I have as a print, I could never have done anything that large in Photoshop and even then I ran into memory issues near the end. I'll have to make sure my next computer is something that can handle my hobby, lol!

DarthFar In reply to ShrunkenJedi [2008-02-09 13:35:29 +0000 UTC]

1000x1000!! Oy. You need a much bigger laptop, and one with more RAM and a butt-kickin' graphics card. Well, of course you know that already...

ShrunkenJedi In reply to DarthFar [2008-02-09 14:18:03 +0000 UTC]

Yeah, word. I love laptops for the portablility (and the smallness! The small keyboard is actually good for my tiny hands!), but I'm thinking a desktop might be the way to go next time. They tend to have so much better specs for the price... I don't even know what'll be in my price range next time I go for a computer, though. I'm graduating college in May and really don't know what the heck I'll be doing at this point.

DarthFar In reply to ShrunkenJedi [2008-02-09 15:19:04 +0000 UTC]

Yeah, the joke is that computers become obsolete as soon as you remove them from their boxes. The thing with laptops is that, if you were to match specs with a desktop, they're always slower. So if you're still going to go for a laptop, you'd need to get a high-end one... which costs a dang lot. (But I do so love my Toshiba...). I agree with you: it would be more practical to get a desktop.

Thanks! I hope you find it useful.

Corel *Painter* can run circles around PS (although it's also a bigger pain, because it has twice to three times the options and "control"). But I've always thought that Corel PhotoPaint and Adobe Photoshop were more or less equal.
