Description 100 Pictures Challenge #7: Heaven. Interpret as you will.

I actually started this in black & white as a possible "base" for collaborating with a friend. But for some reason, when I started painting in the bright spot, the phrase, "where none may follow" started running around in circles in my head, and I knew I had to do a finished version on my own. And then last night I remember just *where* the phrase came from: Arthur Clarke's The City and the Stars: "Within a very short period of time our ancestors and their fellow-races had gone upon a journey which we cannot follow." Whoops. Guess my memory's not what it used to be

Anyway, the book ends with a really good passage that (although it has nothing to do with this picture!) I'd like to share, because Clarke's made of awesomeness:

In this universe the night was falling; the shadows were lengthening towards an east that would not know another dawn. But elsewhere the stars were still young and the light of morning lingered; and along the path he once had followed, Man would one day go again
Now I need to go do another base for real.

Glorious!
Actually reminds me of one of the far-flung "secret" star-systems in Freelancer. Found it breathtakingly beautiful as I do this

This is so amazing! I interpret that heaven for you is more like the pursue to it; so it doesn't actually exist, it is but an ideal. Heaven lies in the effort to elevate your intellect, and reach a higher comprehension.
And visually speaking, it's so powerful an image because of the perspective, almost feels like you're the audience in the front row. This remindes me very much of the Ithaca poem, which I really love. [link]

Btw, I think I know why you don't reveal your real name. I just realised that you being so good, wouldn't want us to say know your real identity lest we be more attracted to your reputation than your true awesomeness! (sort of like how princes disguised as bums to discover a person's true nature)

DarthFar In reply to Dragonfly22 [2009-08-27 03:44:09 +0000 UTC]

Thank you. Oh, I like that: heaven being a journey, rather than a destination.

Thanks for the link to the Ithaca poem! It really is beautiful. I don't think I've encountered it; it'll be on my list of "Poems to learn by heart". [Force knows, it's been too long since I learnt my last one.]

Maybe I just like the idea of having a secret identity. Ha! ha! Oh, and clarify that bit about my "being so good". Because if you're talking about my moral/ethical character, my enemies will be quite happy to disillusion you.

Dragonfly22 In reply to DarthFar [2009-08-29 00:41:41 +0000 UTC]

Glad you like it! I have a book called One hundred and one famous poems and it's wonderful, it has mostly American and Brittish poems. Definitely a must

And well, how to explain the "so good" bit? I say "good" but in general terms, I mean "noble". To me, our moral must rise from inside, from our feelings and experiences and should be the result of years of introspective analysis. "Good" is a person that honestly encourages you, despite his own tragedy, who makes you laugh, and who leaves the world a little better than it was before his existence. Everybody has "flaws" [emphasis on the quotation marks] but if his virtue are equal or greater than his vice, he succeeds.

[bursts out laughing at the sight of the word "noble"]

Sorry! I'd thank you for the compliment, only every time I hear people talk about my being "good", I get into hysterical laughing fits. I'd better keep this remark hidden. Force knows, it doesn't do any good for my Sith image.

KIDDING.

I wasn't joking, y'know? But yeah, I forgot your nick is Darthfar, after all.

I think your reputation as a Sith must be stained already without my help; but alright, I'll refrain next time. Also because I don't want to stir the dark forces of your evil side. *slowly tiptoes away*

This makes me feel incredibly sad, and yet hopeful at the same time.
The brightness at the end gives thought that there is a future, and it will be bright one day, yet at the same time, I can't help but feel that the fleet is somehow moving towards their own destruction...
Meh, I'll stop before I wax philosophical. Beautiful work, Far.

Whatever their fate, nobody here will ever know. Yeah, when you think about all the SF stories of people going into uncharted territory... there's never a happy one, is there?

Thank you very much, FR.

You don't know how much making your day, made my day. But I don't know how to tell you I meant the new Battlestar Galactica not the original. I haven't seen much of the original (well more like can't remember since I was little when I watched it).
