He was desperate to save Padme and he only killed the younglings because he believed he should have to kill Padme. Plus, he regretted it on Mustafar when he cried. Vader certainly didn't want to kill the younglings, but he felt that he had to. He's a tragic villain, not a Dark Side savage.

I had this idea where Anakin comes back to light side early (maybe Sidious' control breaks or something) but he's already done some really horrible things, like kill the children. Even if Padme and Obi-Wan tried to tell that he was under Sidious' control and he wasn't himself, it still haunts him constantly. Combined with the fact he already had severe mental issues, he tries to kill himself. Fortunately, he doesn't succeed but he sure gives Padme and Obi-Wan quite a scare. At least they might realize that Anakin had serious issues and tried to get him help (though I'm not sure if there are even any psychiatrists in the future.) Yes, my mind can be a bit morbid sometimes.

Actually, it's not all that morbid. Vader actually has tried to kill himself many times over what he did. Even when he defeated a clone of Darth Maul (by stabbing himself and Maul with his lightsaber), after which Maul asked what Vader could hate so much to kill him. Vader said himself.

What, really?! Where is that from? Makes me feel even sorrier for him. I'm just trying to figure out how he would try and kill himself when he's in that suit. It just reinforces the theory that he was severely mentally ill, specifically Borderline Personality Disorder (when a psychiatrist thinks a character has something, he/she probably does) and I think he probably had depression as well, both strongly associated with self-harm and suicide. It also further proves he isn't just a machine who doesn't feel or love.

I think even in an AU where he didn't join the Dark Side/come back to the Light Side early that he'd still be seriously mentally ill and struggle with that and hopefully get some help. This means my ideas are bound to be somewhat morbid but with some hope, unlike other AU ideas where everything is happy and Anakin doesn't have any mental issues, which I don't find all that believable.

It was in a comic known as Resurrection from the Star Wars Tales series. A bunch of Dark Side Acolytes resurrect Darth Maul because they believe Vader was too much of a Jedi to be at Palpatine's side. You should be able to see it on YouTube.

That and the way he killed the Maul copy was pretty cool and also kind of sad at the same time. Vader kills him by stabbing himself AND Maul with his lightsaber. And he was STILL going after that.

I agree. Its villains like him that are just more compelling and in-depth than savage ones.
