Description CONCEPT ART. I KNOW THE LINE-ART/COLORING IS FUZZY. :C

This is a long-time dream of mine that I plan on making a reality.

Here's some concept art for the cover of my illustrated version of "The Phantom of the Opera."

I truly want to make this a Leroux-loyal illustrated version of the book, but the question is... should I copy and paste the entire text into this book, abridge the text myself, take an abridged version, or re-tell the story adding lots of twists and extra scenes?

Not sure. This project's still in the concept phase. I've got a sketchbook filled with what each page of the first few chapters might look like... This could be a 50+ pg book.

photoshop! Just so it's got more atmosphere and it's easier to do cool lighting and darker shades.

I would keep most of the actual story. So then it would just be an illustrated version of the book, rather than a version with pictures and a different story.

Completely true! I think that as long as you stay faithful to the book, not nessessarily having all the lines, and bonus scenes are fine, but keeping mostly true will keep most happy. Just think of all the bad things you've ever commented on anything Phantom and try not to make the same mistakes...if that helps

Lolz, I never saw the musical, but I've got the soundtrack, and man was the plot of it aweful! Some of the songs were amazing, but bad plot.

nice! I haven't "seen" it either, but I also have the soundtrack and have seen some *cough* *cough* bootlegs! *cough*... yeah, bad plot. A disaster beyond our imagination!!

ASHAMED? I've only read it cover to cover two or three times at the most. XD I've probably read "apollo's lyre" and other chapters like, 10 times though. Love this book!

I know right?! it's very well written, i also love his realistic style. i'd have to say the beginning chapters are a bit boring for my tastes, but love it either way!!!!

Wow. Simply wow. (Don't worry; I mean wow in a good way, haha!) This cover concept looks amazing, and you should definitely make an illustrated book. I'd be the first one to buy it!

Secondly, maybe not copy and paste the entire text, but you could add important quotes and lines that benefit the characters and storyline, as well as include your own ideas/twists/scenes/etc so it's not just illustrating someone else's story. Also, if it will make it easier on you, feel free the try the abridged version. There are a lot of details to include, meaning it would take a long time and so much effort to completely do the whole story. However, if you are willing to put in the time, the effort, the patience, and everything else that contributes to a successful story, then go ahead and do the long version! I'll root for you either way, and I'm sure you're many other friends will too! Good luck!

I'd totally buy it! (Too bad it's not likely I can get a copy TT___TT) I actually rather like the smokey/fuzzy feeling to this, since the whole travel to the underground it's a rather dreamlike secuence for Christine

Wow, this would be a great book. I would totally buy it.
I'd start by just retelling Leroux's story through your pictures and then maybe telling it in your own words (with credit to Leroux of course)

Thank you, your comment gives me really good direction and ideas on how to proceed! Right now I've been sketching different scenes from the book, just want to make sure I don't already start with too many scenes/pictures of parts that I won't even include in the book.

I love illustrated versions of books, so PotO illustrated, by you... That sounds like a fantastic idea, I bet it'll be really pretty!
Guess what I think you should do? One of those creepy children's versions of classics. PotO would make such a strange kids' book.
