CONCEPT ART. I KNOW THE LINE-ART/COLORING IS FUZZY. :CThis is a long-time dream of mine that I plan on making a reality.
Here's some concept art for the cover of my illustrated version of "The Phantom of the Opera."
I truly want to make this a Leroux-loyal illustrated version of the book, but the question is... should I copy and paste the entire text into this book, abridge the text myself, take an abridged version, or re-tell the story adding lots of twists and extra scenes?
Not sure. This project's still in the concept phase. I've got a sketchbook filled with what each page of the first few chapters might look like... This could be a 50+ pg book.

The second- nay, MILLISECOND- this is published, I will be clamoring for a copy. I may even rob a few people. And/Or start a full-scale riot. And we, the rioters, will scream and wave our books with PRIDE.
Oh yeah. Don't abridge, please oh please oh please oh please. I absolutely HATE abridged books. (Well, except the Princess Bride, but that doesn't count, obviously)
Have you ever seen the real (I don't know if there are others) illustrated Phantom book (it's illustrated by Greg Hildebrandt)? It's spectacular, you should check it out. I own it and can't get enough. ^_^

Lol! Not sure what the pros and cons are (yet) of abridging. I mean, I've always liked the idea of keeping all the points of the story in. SO not sure yet.
No I haven't!! But I just googled it, looks amazing! I've seen some of those illustrations floating around, didn't realize it was from an illustrated book. Incredible!

The only pro I can think of for abridgement is if you're abridging Victor Hugo's ramblings, for obvious reasons. But even then, the abridged copies of Les Mis or Hunchback omit all the fun character descriptions, and it makes me a very sad panda.
I'm pretty sure you can get a decent copy of the illustrated Phantom for a pretty good price at a used bookstore. The one by where I live always seems to have a few copies floating around for around 10 or 15 bucks.

hmmm that's a tough one for me. Depends on the audience. Maybe the abridged version, since a lot of people are familiar with that. And maybe try to condense some of the wordings, in other words, don't copy and paste everything. Maybe keep some of the quotes from characters unchanged.

I would probably abridge, since it would be really brutal to try and illustrate everything otherwise. I mean, as much as I love the original, it really takes it's time to get to the good bits with Erik. I mean, of course when it does get there it's wonderful, but yeah, to illustrate everything in between would be a bit of a pain.
So if there's a good abridged version out there you could try it, otherwise maybe abridge all the bits that aren't juicy but keep the good stuff.
And I like what you have going on here, can't wait to see it finished! 8)

I think you should do whatever you feel like doing, plot-wise. ^^ I would support abridging the text yourself, though. It would certainly take more time, but it would also be more... yours. Y'know?

Maybe make it somewhat like a "children's book" version? Or something like Hugo Cabret if you've ever read that.

I saw this guys' original artwork in an art gallery a few months ago, totally inspiring me to keep on illustrating. I LOVE his style, his colors, his expressive work. I want to BE him someday. XD So thanks for the reference! I love it!

Hugo Cabret? No let me google search quickly... but yes, that's what I was thinking. Sort of a version for kids/tweens/teens(and adults!) so that anyone could pick it up and understand the story. ^^

Awesomeness simply awesomeness, it's up to you but a good idea is tell a scene from another point of veiw (like have the scene where Christine unmasks Erik from his pov)

That's a wonderful idea! I also thought it'd be nice to sort of "simplify" the story so that kids in their tweens or teens could understand the story abit better. It could add to the poignancy if it's told very "clearly" instead of like a mystery novel for adults. from 1911.

Yes! And actually his mask is supposed to be full-face like the full-face mask in the beginning of Requiem mask etc. but it's very restricting for my cartoons (I've TRIED believe me!) so I'm going to leave room for a mouth.
