Description
My... where have I been all these months/years?Well, the answer to that one is really, quite complicated *cough*LOKIHAPPENED*cough*...
AHEM...
But... Fear not!!! I have not been completely wiped off the map! And I am about to make a glorious return. Here's something to whet your appetite. Hmm... what could DarthxErik be cooking up? Just keep an eye out for more to come!
Would love to hear your input on this one... What do you think of these character designs for a work that is based off of Gaston Leroux's "The Phantom of the Opera"?
Are you at all concerned that Erik tries so darn hard to fit in, putting a nose on his mask... when in actuality, I don't draw noses on any of my other characters (ever)?!? *shrug* And... They also don't have colored eyes. But they're just too cute that way, and I would hate to change them!
Still... what is your opinion on Raoul's lack of a mustache? I think he's super adorable, and more boyish that way (and I think that was Leroux's original intent, was it not? In making a point that Raoul had a *faint* mustache...) Anyway, I'm loathe to add one now. (NOW THAT HE LOOKS LIKE AN ADORABLE CAPTAIN AMERICA OR SOMETHING OR OTHER, GOSH I JUST WANT TO GLOMP HIM!)
And lastly... what do you think of Christine's brunette curls? I had blonde in mind, but feel like I'm going against my gut on that one. Christine, to me, has always been brunette. The historical person who Christine Daae was based off on, Christine Nilsson, wasn't platinum-blonde anyhow. And neither was Mary Philbin. Or most of the Christines to-date. Another reason why brunette could make sense (I'm grasping at straws now) is that most girls who are born blonde simply lose their golden locks as they mature. Perhaps Christine had golden locks as a child... I know I did!
YEAH YEAH... Every Leroux purist is going to shun me for all of this...
Still, I'd like to hear your opinions.
Your obedient servant,
~DarthxErik
Edit: You're welcome. You never knew you wanted to see Christine so badly in a light-purple gown UNTIL NOW.
Seriously, I'm about to eat her up.
DOUBLE EDIT: CHECK OUT the UPDATED VERSION of my CHARACTER DESIGNS!

Good LORD, how we've missed you, girl!!! ^^
Wow, it's so weird to see your characters with relatively realistic proportions!Β I can't wait to see where this is going!
To be completely honest, I think Erik's hair looks a little...shall we say, shaggy, around the edges. Great. Now the entire picture is ruined. XP JK.
Keep 'em coming, DxE!

Missed you too!! Glad to be back!
Haha-- More realistic... not exactly! But perhaps more than my earlier stuff, yes! They're more or less a 3-1 body/head ratio... And realistic proportions are 7-1.
HA! I hope the "shagginess" is all teasing, because I do want to know what you think. Hehe. Thank you so much! I am excited to continue on!

Personally, I like your designs. Despite what Leroux says, I have never been much for giving Raoul a mustache. I also really like Christine as a brunette. Love your work. They all look so cute

Yay! Yeah... Raoul's mustache just makes him look old! And comical. Don't want that! ... And glad you like Christine as a brunette. I think it's rather iconic, despite it being a detail that is straying from Leroux. Well, won't be the last detail I omit from the story! Hope everyone will be ok with my version of it. Thanks so much again!!

Good to see you back on here again!! Hope you've been doing well!
Your style has changed a little too! I think you've got pretty good designs there, except maybe you should leave Erik's nose off in order to match the rest of the designs and make it seem more cohesive
π: 0 β©: 1
DarthxErik In reply to Sierryberry [2014-09-29 21:09:18 +0000 UTC]
YAYYY! *high five* hope all is well on your end too! I always think of you when I see anything by Dreamworks.
Has it? Good! Hope to think it's gotten better. I did some overlay with the original sketches, and more hand-drawn lines with these, which is the style I'm hoping to go with. That's new for sure! And the proportions of my little guys hasn't really changed... but I like showing height differences with these character designs. Hope to keep that consistent.
Put Erik's nose off, I'll see if I can work that out. It's interesting, b/c if I do have to make anything consistent, it may have to be with giving everyone ELSE a nose, so that that detail of the story can be kept in. Also, Lerik's design with the nose just completes him! I'm torn... XD

It is, I'm graduating next spring and I'm working on getting my portfolio together along with all the work I've done for an internship and a studio project. Crazy busy but exciting times!
Actually yes, either take all the noses off or put them all on XD It's true, Lerik's design does kind of require a nose seeing as that could be a part of his actual character!Β

Ooh yay! What degree did you get again? Mine's in 3D animation, but I'm shooting for 2D artist jobs working with mobile/tablet games hopefully, as that's what I did for a previous internship. Perhaps even character designs eventually. Graduation's making me sooo nervous.. :[Β

I'm not interested as much working with video games, but more like ipad-mobile game stuff. The internship I worked with previously had me and some others creating an educational interactive app for tablets, based on Indian culture. I got to do illustration and animation for that, so ideally I'd like something I can do a little of both in! How did your children's books work out?

*flails in delighted glee then hugs you and the artwork* I think the added nose is a nice touch, and works well BECAUSE of the mask. Also, Raoul is indeed adorable, without the stache.

Hi SailorPhantom! So glad to hear from you! ^_^
*and hugs you back*
Ok, mask-nose... check! And Raoul w/o stache, check! I think the point in Leroux's narrative was to describe Raoul as extra innocent/boyish looking... and that he was really, really boyish for his age, almost girlish. But instead of putting in a "faint" mustache, I'm just leaving it out altogether!!
π: 0 β©: 1
SailorPhantom In reply to DarthxErik [2014-09-29 05:49:15 +0000 UTC]
And you!
I think Leroux was being kind by putting in 'faint' Also, Christine is lovely. We really shouldn't be bothered by a blonde or brunette Christine, it's her voice that matters anyway.

YAYAYAY!
HA! Yes.
Christine IS lovely. Always a role-model. And GOOD. POINT!!
I also rather like how the Phantom is like BLACK, head to toe... Christine has chocolate-brown hair, and luscious outfits (she's just so captivating!)... and then Raoul is blonde, spiffy, and clean-cut. LIGHT. It's all ends of the spectrum, and I like that!

YES FIRST COMMENT
*clears throat* sorry, ill stop that.
Hello my friend im happy your back! I will now speak my mind about your glorious art!
1. I will start with Raoul. I dont know why, but too many versions of the musical have given Raoul somewhat of a caramel-brown colored hair, and its always stuck. So thats a color im comfortable with, but....you know what? I like him as a blondie!! It makes him cuter when hes acting silly or shy.
Also, just because hes from a rich family, i always imagine him well dressed, in kinda bright colored suits. Blue, purple, but mostly some kind of grey. I like yours with his cute little vest!
LASTLY, his hairstyle is fabulous, dont change it ever. And heck i love it when you give him a moustache! And guys can grow them back....so i would alternate from time to time, but do EXACTLY as you please!!
2. Now for Christine. Yes of course theres always fuss with blonde or brunette, and truely i love them both. A good amount of versions make her a ginger too! (I use the word ginger cuz I AM ONE XD) i think for Leroux's novel, Christine just looks so good blonde. Her hair doesnt even have to be that curly naturally! Just kinda wavy. But so many depictions make her a brunette, so thats beautiful too!! Ive always preferred her brunette (and not Ginger) in the musical. Dang it looks good. (She can only be ginger in LND *hides*)
And i like her dress! The purple is good, and the fact that the color doesnt pop makes her a lot more regal, to me. So, its fabulous. I LOVE IT ALL.
3. AAAAAANNNNDDDD saving the best for last, ERIK. Okay to be fully honest i have always adored YOUR version of him, just because its so original! And true to the book!!! (And then your other version, which is DANG SMEXY). I love how hes got that long ponytail, his height, the eyes, and his messy black hair!! In the book i always imagine him with sorta slicked back...brown hair? Light brown? (DARN YOU MICHAEL CRAWFORD!) anyways, whatever to mine, i adore every aspect of your Phantom, of your Erik, because its new!! Its a breath of scary-fresh air!! Nobody gets in that nice horror aspect, AND how he can somewhat be charming. Well YOU did that 200% perfectly, so please never change it!
OKAY THIS HAS BEEN FUN. Stay fresh mon amie, have a good life for me!!

WELL... not quite the very first, but oh so close! First *long* comment, to be sure!
First off, loved reading your slew of comments! Detailed comments are SO appreciated. And I like hearing your personal opinions, along with specific things you like about my designs! Thanks so much!! Very helpful, after just finishing these and proceeding on with... the next portion of the project.
1. Raoul. Glad you're digging the blonde! He just strikes me as a the honest, 100% noble prince-type. In the book he is blonde, and the main point Leroux makes is that he's so YOUNG looking, like he looks 16. Even though he's in his 20's. So that made me think of Steve Rogers. And I did enjoy designing that hairdo. Definitely fitting for him, and I got rid of that ridiculous Patrick Wilson bob. Those days are over!! -- I do plan to give each of these characters some different outfits for, say, different occasions? I'll have the most fun with Christine, for that. Anyway, back to Raoul! I like your ideas of fun colors for his suits. I was thinking a navy blue would be splendid with his blonde look. ^_^ Hmm... grey. Liking that! He is rich, after all!
2. Christine. Glad you could go either way with the hair color! I'm still tossing it around (no pun intended), although designing these I'm starting to lean toward brunette, because as I said, I'm starting to go with my gut. If haters gonna hate... so be it! I've always drawn her hair exactly so, with lots and lots of curls... the time-period certainly calls for it! This design, by the way, is NOT for the musical. But for a version based on the Gaston Leroux book. (and don't you DARE mention that sorry excuse of a musical in my presence again, we shall not speak of it, ever, understood?!?! *points*.....
)
3. Best for last, of course!... ERIK! Yay, yay, yay! His is the design I've always been set on, but I did update him a bit, for this project. Namely, his hair, and his overall lean, tall look compared to other characters. He's EXTRA tall. As much as I'm going to miss Gerik/musical-Erik for this project, glad to work with Lerik and make him as lovable as the others have been! -- Ponytail... I assume you mean "coattail" (or else I am very worried...) -- Glad the design looks new, refreshing, and scary-charming. Wow. That's exciting to hear!
Will press on with him, and strive to make him as epic as he truly is!!
