You’ve been traveling for what feels like forever. The night sky beginning to darken in color. You stop to rest, exhausted and incredibly tired but are rudely alerted by the sound of vicious sounding dogs, they sound pretty hungry and large in number. What do you do? A] Run, Flee
B] Hide, head for the bushes, then search for shelter.
C] Follow the noise and attack

Rowan's ears twitched in time with his hoof-beats, the steady rhythm almost lulling to the tired stallion. Snorting, he slowed down to a walk, the change in pace helping to shake some alertness back into him. Looking skyward, Rowan was surprised when he saw how low the sun had sunk, his nerves rising slightly at the realization that night was coming quickly. As he worked his parched mouth, Rowan carefully scanned the empty plains around him.

Autumn had blanketed the lands in hues of gold, red and orange. The grasses weren't as dry as they normally would have been, as the season had been a particularly wet one. As if to punctuate that fact, Rowan's front right hoof made a splash, causing him to pause and look down to see a small pool of water under him. He licked his dry lips, but resisted drinking from the muddy puddle. Surely there would be a better water source nearby, or at least a cleaner puddle. “Besides, it's far too open to rest here...” Rowan reminded himself out loud, a growing habit that both irritated and soothed him. He would never admit it openly but the isolation was beginning to get to him.

The only horses he'd run into had been while he was still near the human settlements. All were behind fences, and he'd discovered that lingering attracted unwanted attention from the humans. A few continued to chase him beyond their properties, he never thought twice about running from them. From the short talks with the horses, most frantically warning him to leave, he learned most people were not worth trusting. It only cemented his resolve to leave his old home, as no human would treat him as well as Sarah had. That had been a one time deal, never to be repeated.

After a few more minutes of walking, Rowan came to a rise in the land. Rowan sighed in amazement as he crested the hill, taking in the glorious land before him as it almost seemed to glow in the light of the sinking sun. In the far distance he could see a mountain range extending beyond the horizon, the evergreen carpeted slopes contrasting the autumn adorned trees of the mixed forest below. Between Rowan and the treeline was a sea of golden grass, rising and falling softly. From his vantage point, Rowan spotted a river in winding down from the hills and into the forests that bordered the plains.

Rowan's relief at the sight of both shelter and water was short lived as an all too familiar sound reached his ears. His heart began to race as his head snapped in the direction of the noise. Rowan strained his ears, hoping he hadn't heard what he had thought he did. It would seem that whatever gods there may be were not smiling upon him today, as he not only heard but could now see the pack of dogs in the distance. He grimaced at the sight; He'd run into starving strays around his old farm, but they were few in numbers and we're easily scared off. These will not be so easily dissuaded, Rowan thought to himself as he began to ease his way down the hill quietly, If I can make it into the forest I should be able to lose these mongrels.

Just as he began to pick up his pace, he could hear the dogs' barking from much closer. He didn't bother to look behind him, instead Rowan urged his tired limbs into high gear. Only as he sped down the hill and came back onto level ground did he realized just how far the forest actually was. A snarl from his right startled him, pumping even more adrenaline through his body. One of the dogs, clearly one meant to keep pace with the quarry and steer it, had caught up with him despite his head-start.

It snapped at his hocks, Rowan kicking out at it in response but not dropping his pace. He stayed true to his course, his eyes locked on the forest that still seemed so far away. He noticed a well used trail and turned slightly to follow it, knowing it would most likely lead him to the river. Even though he hadn't seen any other animals while scouting from the hill, Rowan couldn't help but wonder if he'd run into anyone. Unlikely, he thought, surely they would have heard the dogs and run off.

Behind him, Rowan could hear the other dogs starting to gain. Now and then he would catch a glimpse of one out of the corners of his eyes, but he didn't bother turning to look at them fully. The dog behind him continued to try to make contact with any part of Rowan it could, at one point even grabbing a mouthful of his tail. That action earned it a swift kick, his hoof connecting solidly with the dog's shoulder and causing it to release him as it rolled away yelping.

Rowan's small victory was short lived, as he found himself flanked by a new dog, the others not far behind it. The forest was growing closer, and, despite his muscles' growing protests, the adrenaline, along with the kennel club's encouragement squad, Rowan was bound and determined to make it. I've not come this far to die now, not to these fleabags, Rowan growled internally, clipping another ankle biter in the jaw with another kick.

Artist Notes:
There are so many things I hate about this image that I'll spare everyone the details of my self loathing (lol). I started this the day after I finished Rowan's ref, and probably a week before I originally submitted him. The background was made after the body was almost completely done, hence why it doesn't quite seem to fit. Plus, this is actually the most detail background I've ever done, but that's part of why I joined, to force myself to actually do backgrounds. There was suppose to be a dog chasing him, which I may do later, but I am tired of staring at this xD. I also ended up having to reinstall my photoshop after I somehow managed to overwrite some of my preset brushes, because apparently I am an idiot. It was only after all that mess that I remembered how to add brushes permanently to my preset list (aka put it in the preset folder -_- so obvious).

Anyways, it's time for a quick introduction. I'm Sassy, and I'm a rusty newb at roleplaying. I found myself inspired to draw after finding this group, which was a godsend as I have been struggling to get back into art for the last few years. I hope this will be the start of a long journey, and not a short interluded that fizzles out and leaves me stuck again. I will point out now that I have extremely limited internet access, so I'm not sure I can really join in the more intensely role play aspects, more likely I'll stick to the quests and events. Still, I hope to dip my toe into possibly doing collabs, or art featuring other people's characters, but I make no promises as my muse is a particularly fickle beast.
