Personality
The kind of son most mothers wish they had. Motivated to succeed in his father's footsteps; he eagerly pursues his perception of perfection. Though well-intentioned, his strong sense of justice can be lead astray by preconceived notions of right and wrong. His endeavors are supported by an unerring faith in his leader and the path chosen by Cascade. While spirited in carrying out his training, outwardly he projects an air of austerity that can make him seem dull or cold to his peers.
Ephram's every action is deeply rooted in his relationships; his loyalty to Cascade and to Talori in particular are always at the forefront. He would gladly die for his herd, though he almost certainly has yet to grasp the consequences of such a feat. Indeed, the colt's willingness to serve as a Guardian is born from fantastical childhood tales of honor and devotion. As a foal he dreamed of working alongside his father, protecting the royal family from the evils of the outside world. From the safety of his seaside villa he views his home with rose-colored glasses; they are the ultimate good, and any who threaten them, the unredeemable enemy. He finds it difficult to forgive the sins of the past, and despite the burgeoning political closeness with Serora remains skeptical towards the herd that sheltered their invaders. Personal feelings aside, the tenderfoot is dedicated to following the letter of the law; both as a civilian and its enforcer. He believes he has no right to question the establishment, however wrong it might seem.
In what little personal life he allows himself, Ephram is a reserved but more affable fellow. Any days off are spent with his family; specifically, amusing his sister and her bevy of female friends. Though he tends to be the target of teasing among them, he dishes out a fair bit too as part of his big brother duties. While not particularly social on his own, he is more than willing to partake in entertaining Elyon's guests when asked, if only to spend time with her. But he relies heavily on his sister during these interactions, usually requiring her direction when he's unable to read the room. In return he helps to curb her enthusiasm and serve as a voice of reason when she's off pulling crazy stunts. More than once he's carried her home kicking and screaming because he wouldn't let her get hurt doing something stupid. Apart from Elyon he's more aloof, preferring to keep to himself unless engaged. Socially stiff around anyone he doesn't know well, his conversations can seem disjointed and awkward while he flounders for things to say. He's most comfortable when talking about his work, though he tends to focus on the minutiae rather than anything of importance.
History
Summary
- The child of what were once a loving couple; raised by his father and stepmother after his birth mother disappeared.
- Reared under the notion that the strong should protect the weak, he trained with Hector from an early age to defend himself and his family.
- When the time came he was apprenticed to his father's old mentor who had retired as a Guardian years before.
- As part of his training his mentor arranged to have him serve as guard and companion to Pearl.
Ephram's father, Hector, came from agricultural roots; one of many children born to work the family farm. The largest and strongest of the bunch, he grew up taking care of his siblings and keeping them safe. When the colt came of age it was no surprise that he chose to become a Guardian. Under the instruction of Seiren, a seasoned soldier and family friend, he took to the role quickly. Completely dedicated to his training, and later his work alongside his mentor as members of the royal security force, he wouldn't have met Esther at all if not for his mother's insistence. The match was arranged and the first meeting went swimmingly. As the single daughter of a renowned blacksmith, patching burns was second nature to her. Compassionate to a fault, her job as a cleric and excellent bedside manner spoke for itself. They married not long after their first meeting; though part of it was due to familial expectation, the two were fond of each other. Hector considered himself a lucky man.
Once it was appropriate, the two conceived their first child. The expecting parents were anxious, in part because they were slightly older than one would expect of new parents; they worried about their foal's well-being day and night, excitedly speculating about which of their features they would receive. Certainly they'd have their mother's eyes, but what about their ears, or nose, or coat? When the matter came to feathers or fins, Esther was silent. Hector reassured her that he'd love them all the same. The birth was difficult, but successful. And so Ephram was brought into the world, a bouncing baby hippocampus. Hector was over the moon with joy, but there was something in Esther that gave her pause. She was happy sure, yet her husband could tell she was holding back. 'She's just tired', he told himself, trying to put it out of his mind. Esther was an empathetic and emotional person, and he knew that. But when she disappeared he couldn't understand it. He was heartbroken. The family kept their distance after that, the scandal too great a burden for them to bear.
He might've raised his son alone if not for Liza, a friend of Esther's who stepped in to help in her absence. She felt partially responsible for the situation, having known about her friend's state of mind, and initially did so out of guilt. But it soon became evident that the mare had feelings for him. And in time those feelings were returned. They were married when Ephram was still too young to remember, so Liza is the only mother he's ever known. Growing up, his father told him about Esther, but that only caused the colt to grow resentful towards her. What kind of monster would abandon his father?
A year later, Hector and Liza had a daughter, Elyon. And although they were apprehensive about how Ephram would respond, she became the center of his world. Even after he was old enough for apprenticeship, he would always make time for his baby sister. At eight he was already dead-set on becoming a Guardian, so Hector took him to Seiren. By this time the Guardian was long retired, so he dedicated all of his efforts to teaching his charge. It was during his training when Freedom's Flight attacked Inaria. As the bombs rained down from the sky, Ephram ran home to find his family, only to be captured. He was reunited with them in Torrine, along with someone he never expected to meet. His parents were speechless when they caught sight of Esther. They'd never told Ephram where she'd gone, but they'd known. She'd joined the Flock.
They hoped she would avoid them, but instead Esther approached and embraced her son. Ephram was confused until he heard her name. He wrenched away from his birth mother, and it looked like the mare might cry. When a young stallion came to comfort her and addressed her as 'mother', Hector and Liza were stunned. She blubbered something to him before leaving, and he explained what she hadn't been able to. After she'd left them to join the Freedom's Flight she was scared. His father had done what he believed Hector couldn't and taught her how to be stronger on her own. He was their son, Noah. Though he was now older than his half-brother due to an aging potion he'd taken years prior. He promised to keep Esther away from them, if only for her own good.
Ephram was furious with his parents for hiding Esther's whereabouts from him, and only Elyon's crying was able to quiet his rage. But being in Torrine meant he couldn't stay angry for long; he needed to be with his family. They didn't speak to Esther again, though they did see her from a distance on occasion, closely guarded by Noah. When the flock was forced from the city and they were allowed to return home, everyone resumed their daily routines as best they could. Ephram began training under Seiren again with renewed enthusiasm. An even quicker study than his father, it was decided that for his final year he had more to gain from field experience. It was through Seiren's connections that Ephram was assigned as a companion for the late Emperor's daughter, Pearl. He spends his days at her beck and call, learning on the job as he goes. Working so he might one day prevent the flock and their ilk from ever returning to Aquore again.
