Draw your character winning a fight

"Man, as pretty as the swamp was, life there was never what I'd call easy. While most of the time I could get away with eating lily pads and vines, sometimes I nearly starved-but hey, I'm okay now dudes!
Seasons aren't usually noticed much in the swamp, it's always warm and humid under the canopy. One winter was different though, all the trees lost their leaves, vines turned black, and even most of the river froze. Where I could usually get by on lily pads and moss if I had to, there was nothing this year. The only patch of green left was guarded by the only Alligator that didn't hibernate.
He was living fat and happy, devouring any creature hungry enough to try to sneak onto his territory, exploding out of the water and swallowing them whole. I had seen it a few times. After eating only bark for three weeks it was hard not to linger by the tiny spot of grass, watching the water for any sign of movement, hoping for just a mouthful of the sweet, delicious green stuff.
One day, I couldn't take it anymore. My stomach was cramped and every movement was exhausting. If I didn't eat soon, that would be the end of me man. I gathered what energy I had left and made a mad dash to the river bank. The gator was there in the water waiting. I could see his yellow eyes light up at the thought of another meal.
Much to his surprise, I didn't stop at the grass but continued to charge at the gator. Half way out of the water he lunged at me, but I reared back and avoided his shining teeth by inches. As he landed I came down with my hooves, aiming at the monsters eyes. My hooves sank into the mud as the Gator rolled out of the way.
He laughed, telling me this was a fight I could not win, but I was driven mad by hunger and continued my assault.
I will spare you the gory details, but I survived that winter. As did several other creatures, thanks to me.
I made a whole lot of friends after that too! The deer would run and play with me in the woods, and the birds would play with my mane, and the bunnies would cuddle up with me when I slept! Gosh, it was great!

This was the winter Dandelion discovered his mushrooms. He just never stopped eating them when spring came around.
Also from a long time ago, I could use more practice for non-horsey things, but my water came out okay C:
Any tips/critiques/whatever to help me improve my art or writing are welcome!!
