Ah, going back to the TOS era way of doing things, where each ship had a different insignia.
I wonder what it would look like if that carried over to TNG with everybody getting their own type of fancy gold badge.

Don't know if I quite agree with that. Uniting the fleet under one cool-looking banner always appealed to me.
If you mean "cantralizing" to be the opposite of "centralizing", then I agree about it being a mistake. I always felt Starfleet sorely lacked a rallying symbol, until the movie era.

As I've said elsewhere, I prefer the oldschool idea of an individual patches for each ship over the uniformity they chose to do in TNG and beyond.
