DBZ and all its characters belong to Toei Animation, Funimation, and Akira Toriyama (Who is god of this world).I don't have a huge problem when shows want to put in their writer's view of the world or do any of that other stuff, but don't interrupt the action for it. DBZ touched on Vegeta and Piccalo's pasts once or twice when their was a significant break in the action, that's it.
LEARN FROM THEM, NARUTO, BLEACH, ALL THE YU-GI-OH SERIES, INUYASHA, AND PROBABLY EVERY OTHER ANIME EVER!

Agreed. Most Shounen manga/anime is overly cliche BS. (I'm looking at you Bleach and Naruto!) Anyway, don't listen to those fanbrats who are bashing DBZ, because little do they know, that without Akira Toriyama's creative influence, those two animes I mentioned, along with One Piece, would never exist. Totally agree with you on this. I love the fact that DBZ is all about the action and doesn't need to get up its ass about intricate plot details or subplots or anything like that. This is the winning formula, good vs evil with a lot of fighting and explosions.

I used to love DBZ and still actually do in a nostalgic way, but reading the manga today, I can't help thinking the characters are rather shallow and everything is so over the top. As a kid I didn't mind, but today...
Not to mention the whole premise with the Dragon Balls made the story rather predictable, because the reader knew none of the characters were dead forever. And even if they for a while did they lived on in the after life and you read about it so there is really no consequences to death whatsoever. That just weakens the dramatic aspect of the story. Did you notice that Future Trunks is one of the most popular characters even though he showed up for such a short time? People like a little drama and the lone young man who didn't have the power of the Dragon Balls to back him up had just that, including a tormented past.
Please don't misunderstand this comment, I'm just trying to show that while Dragon Ball was obviously an awesome franchise there should be room for other types of action; stories that delve into other genres I guess.

DBZ is my favorite anime and manga...
I agree with you in some ways though it had such a great start!!! I think if you marathon from the beginning of the saiyan saga to the end of the freiza saga you have gold... then the androids come along... and its kinda down hill from there...
BUT
I dont agree the characters are shallow, I think a lot of characters, especially Vegeta's character are complex... although some characters in the amine I feel, were forgotten about.

I didn't say the characters were cardboard. Don't forget I did love the show. But even Vegeta, who may well be the most complex character of that show, can't compare to the great majority of characters from most other shows. Those characters question their own actions and have to deal with moral choices on a whole different level and have more emotional depth.
If you don't agree with me, that's fine. After all, you can interpret characters in different ways.

I'm not trying to start a discussion on what is better. The very opposite. I wanted to point out that there are subgenres and genres-mixes and that we should STOP saying one way of opproaching a genre has to be better than the other.

I completly agree with this statement, there's no need for so many love triangles (i'm talking to YOU naruto *gives evils*) DBZ was all about good storyline, brilliant fighting scenes, and good insights into chracters life, BUT ONLY WHEN NECESSARY DBZ is and always will be my Fave Anime of all time ^_^

heres a very good anime with little backstory or drama Guuren Lagann is in the last two or three eps and end of the second movie would destroy Dbz as in Gurren Lagann there was planets thrown at a group that lived another was smashing two galaxies together for a attack proof first one to show them literally by the force of two colliding attacks suck the universe up[albeit a pocket dimension's universe but still] [link]

Sorry I was in a rage/blowing off stream mode I have a problem when I get in ether if not both modes and stumble upon something I dislike by change.
God I feel like a ass when I came out of rage and blowing of steam mode at those times I would if Da would let a person delete or hide there own comments I'd do that.
Sorry for bothering you and coming off as a jerk (I'm for the most part a nice guy) also to be honest I only liked DB and I liked gt I do like the kai version of z oddly even though I think the kai English va's lack the quality of z's English va's
reason I hated dbz I guess it was all those dragging out one scene for far to that made me hate the z version while I liked the kai version even though kai is basically to keep the cash cow going
