Description 500hrs render time with DOF effects. Built from aprox 50 metaspheres with 5 different materials grouped together to achieve blending of ripple effects. A real headache for my poor old brain and my processor which nearly melted. A mains blip wiped the render out three weeks into the project and I had to mask of 3/4 of the image with a black 2d plane and render the last bit and piece it all back together in PSP7. On the whole, one of the most difficult rendering projects I have undertaken to date. Oh, but it was fun P

In case I didn't say, the render can be done in 1/10 the time with standardAA and a distance mask, use the mask in CorelPhotopaint to controll a blur filter and it does nearly as good a job!

Remarkable! Doubt I'd have either the patience or the computing resources to even attempt it. Quite remarkable!

Thanks... I wouldn't have had the patience if I'd have known how long it was going to take in the end - but for some daft reason I assumed it was going to be easy.

Well that's very kind of you to say so! Yes, beware of using metaspheres and transparent materails in a DOF environment - very very slow to render!

Everything seems to be very slow to render. Bah, bah, BAH! I just looked through all the Daz bryce galleries...You sure have a lot of work in there

I try to keep myself occupied. I think they like it because mostly I just do simple stuff with bryce.

Simplicity is best a lot of times...Someone keeps telling me that what I think is simple stuff in Bryce is not simple at all. I suppose learning about the program's ins and outs does have its advantages...

The grass is always greener... in the render of the latest software. Or so it seems to me, people would rather pay for the latest blinging piece of software than learn the "ins and outs" as you put it, of the stuff they have already got. It's the way the world has become.

Zethara In reply to davidbrinnen [2005-05-24 14:09:35 +0000 UTC]

Yes...most people will always take the easier route and miss all the interesting details along the way...A lot of the art done with the super 3d programs looks technically excellent to me, but it all has a sameness about it...Not creative or expressive.

Too true. In a lot of ways it is the restrictions that the software puts on you that makes the challenge interesting - well that's me. I like puzzles.

Thanks. You do not want to know how long this image took to set up - it was only my ingorance (that is would be easy) and my stubborness (that I will get it right) that got the project a) started and b) finished. A victory for the much maligned ingorance and stubborness?

I'll be honest with you, I've taken a look at your site and I think it is clear that you are one sandwitch short, however, I've very impressed with your artwork - so swings and roundabouts - I think, if I can get it to work, I will endevour to add you to my watch list. I have the most creaking, broken, flakey internet connection know to BT so don't think I can do anything quickly, but I can see I'm going to have to take a closer look at your work. Frankly I struggled to understand your comment and I hope most of the stuff you put on your page it intended ironically - but who can say, who can say, but I believe us Bryce users should stick together, even if I can't understand you. Cheers.

Materials are great

davidbrinnen In reply to torico [2005-01-11 17:11:12 +0000 UTC]

Thanks, the materials was the key to keeping down the render time, but it pushed up the development time no end! At the finish it was Google images that provided the best clues as to what I was looking for. Not my imagination.

vozzz [2004-12-13 22:33:50 +0000 UTC]

that looks stunning. I've tried to make a water splash myself, but It never worked out. But that is a very cool idea how you put a blck plane over part of the image and render every bit separately. I might try rendering in separate passes next time, so The bits that need radiostiy i'll render separately and then just stick them onto the other pic, witha basic model. in its place to cut don rendering time.

davidbrinnen In reply to vozzz [2004-12-14 16:01:37 +0000 UTC]

Cutting down on the render time - for the other version of the splash image, which is on my website, I used a distance mask, PSP to alter the greys to give me the point of greatest focus and corelphotopaint to apply the mask with a blur effect and finally photoshop to add a diffuse effect - this cut the render time by a factor of 25 or to put it another way, 480hours of render time saved!

Cheers, I'm glad you liked it, I mean, unless it is for a competition I generally just do what I want, but it kinda makes it seem more worth while if you have something to show for it at the end. Like I said, three weeks was a killer render, espically with the mains cutting out at the end that was a pain. I'm sure you can imagine I had a few choice words to say in that event. Thanks.
