Melody's 'Adventure Costume' as well as her (and Penny's) last name is introduced. (You can find a mix of anime shows in her costume. Three of them in fact. A Hundred Whuffie points to the first one to get them all)You'll get to see Penny's head in the next strip, as well as some information on what Pippkin's been teaching her kid, as preparation of this fairy tale he talks about, the one where she doesn't read, but live, through. And some of you would probably guess what that means. Blasted Pippkie and his gift for gab. Even with his head (and accent) off, he still can lay it on thick.

Since someone said Princess Tutu and Sailor Moon, I will guess that the third is none other than Saint Tail.

Perhaps, perhaps. But I wanted to show Disney-esque with a little edge into it anyway. My intentions is to have her adventure to be more stealth-based than hyper-pastel colored. You'll find more about it when Pippkin describe what he and Melody have been doing in the month or two between chapters. Just keep in mind that "Stealth" is in emphasis here.
At least Melody won't be wearing white makeup and wallow foot deep in blood. And she won't be getting chased around by vampires any.
(And keep in mind that her skirt is lighter colored as well.)

Any particular reason for all the black on the costume? She looks more like Kraehe than Tutu. Is that deliberate? Or is it just that it's in grayscale?

It's just that it's in grayscale. That, and it's actually a combination of three magical girl anime shows, as the questions below tells.

It's probably some dark color, either a deep blue or deep purple. Something that helps her blend into shadows.
