Culture and theme wrapped in a single painting. As fun as it appears, there are deep themes here. Hmmm..this makes me want to make paintings with symbolism and meaning!

I wouldn't wish Mr. Blonde on the bluest of meanies; Keitel's face-off in the background is nothing less than inspired...

Haaaa-Thanks mannnn! It was one of those paintings where theres no second guessing anything==just paint the damn thing and figure probably someone will dig it..

You've got such a blazing talent-- the caricatures are worthy of Mort Drucker and the rendering technique looks like a renaissance master painted it...

I bought a MAD magazine-for the first time in over 10yrs-just to study on the airplane..geeze-thimes they are a changin-huh? I admit some of the writing was clever but it has only like 30 pages and mannnnnn-It makes you yern for Drucker and even angelo torres{the drucker look alike artist}..I guess theres a CD-ROM MAD has out now that has over 600 issues of old MAD's on it..a serious purchase consideration for sure..

SRaffa In reply to davidmacdowell [2009-03-19 22:58:59 +0000 UTC]

My late, great cousin Morris gave me a stack of his old Mad magazines when I was 7 years old-- it was exactly like winning the damn lottery...
Angelo Torres was nothing short of tragic, having to be the b-side to Drucker, and this was a talented guy!
I haven't seen any recent Mads, but I have some idea of what to expect... I guess I'd sooner check with eBay for old copies before I'd go to the CD-ROM, but for all I know, that's really the only way to go now...
Have you ever worked in comics, Dave?

👍: 0 ⏩: 1

davidmacdowell In reply to SRaffa [2009-03-20 23:14:32 +0000 UTC]

Yes Ebay is the way to go-Ive seen you can get an old stack cheap. Yes-ive worked in comics. I dropped out of college and got a job writing/illustrating 8 page horror comic for Fantaco enterprises-within 2 years they went under and I didnt wanna do it anymore because I didnt like it-There was too much work and I didnt like the people that surrounded me-they were all super-hero illustrators which I didnt dig-The pay/gigs were infrequent and I was working 2 normal jobs at the time too..Plus I was 20 and had a smothering girlfriend and was partying alot on top of that. I said "screw comics=Im gunna be a painter!"-haaa-Here I am 20 yrs later finally making that proclamation a reality. I wish I had a teacher or other artists around me but never did..maybe not so much time would have been lost-who knowssssss

Dude-- You've got to find time to write up your biography; I had no idea...
All these things that were sort of illegitimate 25 years ago-- comic art, tattoo art-- who knew we were all toiling away at it separately only to sort of meet up around something called lowbrow and sites like this one all these years later?
