Description
To me, this painting defines my male perspective of love. I like to think that she is completing his puzzle by placing the final piece, rather than removing it. Which one I intended is a perpetual question to me. It is much more interesting to me to hear what others take from it.acrylic on canvas

oh my god. this was exactly what my poem THE MISSING PIECE was explaining. I love it so much. Thank you for making this. and this is my poem that talks about this.
THE MISSING PIECE
By Jessie Davis
Before weβre put on this earth, we must have started out as a whole being.
And then a piece was ripped out of us.
A very important part of us.
A piece that would definitely be missed.
Then we are dropped down on earth.
As we grow up we become confused.
You ask yourself, βWho am I?β
We donβt remember the feeling of getting that piece ripped from us,
But we know its missing because thereβs a hole we want to fill.
We want to find the part of us thatβs missing.
So we can feel whole again.
We will do whatever we can to fill that hole in our lives,
Even if it takes the rest of our lives to find it.
That missing piece is always the same thing,
Love.
Some people find it sooner than others
Some people find it more than once.
And some never do.
Why do we have to live life trying to find that missing piece?
Is life a game?
Is life one sick game?!
If it is, then I donβt understand the rules,
Because I keep finding the wrong people.
I keep finding the wrong pieces.
For me, its like a bunch of puzzle pieces in front of me and I canβt find one that fits.
Not one!

What I first thought was that she was taking the puzzle piece away from him.
I wonder what that says about my perspective..

i don't even know what to say. very creative, emotional, i love it. i took it initially as she was taking a piece, that he has started to love her, and thus symbolically she has a part of him, whether given or taken, but that is just me.

to me this seems to be more the females perspective on the male in love. that she can put the puzzle back together... but hey thats just differing perspectives i guess. its a wonderful piece though, very thought provoking

*high five*
Really, that's the "missing piece" that men generally want women to fill in, though it's more like we want to fill a space in them. Love doesn't mean a lot to men generally, and it's only natural. We want to have a lot of sex so we can procreate a lot. What's the point of romanticizing it?

i like how this portrays a different view of love and relationships than what most media seems to show nowadays
most joke about guys life becoming miserable because of their wives and such, this contradicts that nicely ^^
a very thought provoking piece as well i might add

its an amazing picture, the first thing i thought when i saw it was that she's removing the piece, maybe that has something to do with the unconscious, the deepest part of the mind

i thought immediately that she was putting the piece in him rather than taking. yup.
i like that you included eyes. weird statement... but i think if you didn't give them some sort of eye slit, as you did, the painting would have been unpalatable almost?
i also like that he appears surprised, or confused or something like he doesn't know what's going on quite yet, but he's about to... yeah.
i don't like that she has hair... i like her hair... it looks good... but i don't like that she has it. when i see paintings like this, fictional, fantasy, sci-fi, i try and understand their world. in this case, i see her hair, and wonder if the guy could have hair, or if all male puzzle piece men are bald. then further i wonder about armpit hair, chest hair... blah blah... yuck. sooo i would have much preferred it if she was bald as well. giving her breasts and a womanly figure was enough to dignify that she is indeed female.
ok yeah, sorry. i'm really weird.
it's beautiful, and i love the whole concept. absolutely awesome.

What i see is a truly great depiction of an artist with imagination and depth, allowing a person so see more than one perspective on the piece. For me, after a little thought, you could see a 2 way depection of the biblical characters Adam and Eve.Eve was created from adam, so perhaps she is taking the peice, representing how Eve was created from Adams flesh, but on the other hand the reason she was created, was to give him a partner, to complete Adam, therefore, placing the puzzel peice, showing a sign of being whole, complete. Either way you look at it, you cannot deny the amazing Detail and Depth in the characters, and the intresting scenes around it.Wonderful piece of work <3

To me it seems like she's giving him his final piece and he feels almost surprised and delighted that she had it...like the feeling you get when someone gives you an unexpected gift. That warmth and delight paired with the slight happy embarrassment that they were thinking about you.
This is really touching and beautifully executed.

I heard that a few times when it came out. The movie actually altered the way many people view my painting since. The characters in my painting(in my head anyway) are supposed to be small, like toys. Wouldn't be the first time I've damned "collective consciousness"! Thank you.

I feel like... it's a promise to always put each other back togetehr when they fall apart. Like maybe they got all jumbled up and they're just finishing fixing things.
Great piece, superb vision and creative idea c: Which sounds more bland than I mean. I MEAN it's original. And it's great that you don't want/have a set interpretation and leave it open ended.

P.S. I disagree with :decheckeredpanda: because to me, the hand looked specifically like it was holding to place in! It is a bit ambiguous, for sure, but that was how I saw it.
On second look, though, it strikes me a different way like she is taking the piece out, but only to look at and see closely...and then she'll put it back. Which in a way is expressive of an even more intimate emotion, IMO.
I love love LOVE the vulnerability of his pose. It makes so much sense, to be taken off guard and feel exposed, while someone you love but are afraid to trust - but are taking the leap to trust anyway - removes/completes your heart piece, the final piece.

You are definitely looking at it the RIGHT way. In that, I mean stumbling over which it may be. I had hoped that the painting would have that effect. You eventually have to...compromise.
π: 0 β©: 1
WishIWould In reply to DavidMishra [2010-09-24 02:29:44 +0000 UTC]
Maybe the compromise, for me, is not so much settling on one way of viewing it so much as settling on the idea that it will always be in-between, able to reflect either way, in a sort of "push and pull" fashion. It's like instead of the picture giving us "an answer," it gives us a question - and part of the challenge is learning what the question even is. I think that's perfect, for a piece representing the balancing act of learning to emotionally love and trust another person. Maybe neither she nor he know whether or not she's giving or taking - and maybe neither of them know which answer is "right" either. But either way, it's a moment they're sharing, and the blurred lines of ownership - who the piece belongs to, who should have it, where it belongs - lends a new sense of perspective to the phrase "become one flesh," hm? ^^ They obviously aren't in the mature phase of love that couples reach closer to the ends of their lives...but they're at the beginning of it and not sure how to proceed, which I find very tender.
Thanks for your response! It gave me another chance to consider this picture, which I am finding I love to do! I've never bought a print from dA before but I just may with this, someday anyway.

Congratulations on the daily deviation!
I definitely saw this as her giving him his final piece, rather than taking it, before I even red the description. Either way it's very clear from the mood their postures give off that this is a tender moment of giving love, rather than taking something (though they both seem somewhat hesitant. Then again, given the nature of love and true vulnerability, that's extremely appropriate!). I love how her other hand is on his hand, as if to calm and reassure him.

I know that well. I remember, in high school, other students in my art class would do things that mimicked my style. It was obvious. The first drawing I ever sold (when i was 17) was for a company t-shirt. The third party screen printer altered and used the image for other works. Aside from a handful of original tattoo designs, I have never made ANY money from my art. I strive for original creativity. People steal art. It's one of the easiest things to steal and the culprits seem to carry very little remorse. rant rant rant...
Thank you for the kind comment of my work's originality. THAT I appreciate.

But that's what makes me and my friend reluctant to go into art, the fact that someone will take it and make a profit off it without our permission...
