Description Step 3. Colour Rough

Okay this painfully ugly, and has a lot of mistakes, but it's an important step where I'm working out several things. Firstly I wanted to test if I could make my inked clouds work (answer was no ). I also wanted to test the rimlight on the hair, some sub surface scattering of the light, and just get a general sense of the colour scheme. No real cuts or rendering was employed here, I just wanted get it down quick and see the results.

do you ever find it annoying how much more appealing art is with colour? i only say this as i appreciate coloured finished works greatly, but i love seeing pencil sketches with great flow and original unpolished intent. throw thumbnails of sketches up, and watch the single coloured piece draw the eye, yet try reversing it and the lone sketch thumb gains little admiration. just saying, is all...

i'm glad you posted versions of this piece, i love seeing the process come together. it's like being let in on a secret. i love how dark she looks with so much sun in my eye. niii~ice

why do you think the clouds don't work? Whats wrong with them? How long does this stage take you?

I didn't like the hard edge, nor the line weights on the clouds.

I wasn't really keeping time, but it didn't take too long at all. You can see I've gone out of the lines in places, and I've just used the standard round brush too. It's more about just getting it on the page and seeing what works at this stage.
