How to you keep from smearing gray all over the page? Seems like I always drag my hand through it.

Put a piece of blank paper under your drawing hand.

I tried that... it helped a little but still smeared. Maybe Its my paper/ lead combo.

Plan B. Use a lighter lead.
Also work left to right, and top to bottom, as much as possible.

Amazing piece! How do you work the water soluble graphite? Is it treated the same way as an ink wash?

A little. It's easier to do gradations though, and you can erase mistakes before you apply the water.
Working with purely wet media like ink wash or water colour, you have to get it right the first time, while it is wet, because you can't go in and erase it afterwards.

I actually totally redrew this page. I originally had Sinister more front on, but I think the new angle made it a whole lot better than the original.
