Well, drilling holes into the feet and securing them to the base with stainless steel pins helps tremendously, but I always try to make sure the piece can balance itself without support. It makes for a much stronger sculpture because it places less strain on the oft-times thin ankles. Thank you for sharing your thoughts! Take care.

Hi Moira:

The best part of creating art is, in my opinion: A) The variety, since it's never the same job twice; B) Learning that there's no single orthodox way of getting things done; and C) Swimming up to my armpits in all this neat artwork. It keeps the old neural pathways open and receptive to fresh thinking.

I do my best. I figure that if someone is nice enough to take the time out of their busy schedule to leave me a kind comment that makes my week, the least I could do in return is to acknowledge the gesture. In my opinion, it's these small gestures that make the difference between mere survival and living; between bare existence and civilization. Take care.

Can anyone clarify me if dragons really have a pair of arms more than the wings? I mean: wings, legs and arms or can they have only wings and legs? what is the normally stablished amount of extremities?
and how about the dragons that don't have wings?
then, what is a dragon?
and where can I find more information about the classifications and on which are the world cultures that invented each type.
excellent sculpture. is the very best sculpture of a dragon that I have seen. much more cooler that the ones of McFarlane!
I want to have it.

If we use terrestrial biology as our reference point (the only reference point we have at the present time) it would be illogical - no, a structural impossibilty - to have a set of arms AND a set of wings together on the same beast.

With the bat, the closest vertebrate analogue we have to a dragon's physionomy, the wings are nothing more than a set of arms with a wide membrane stretched between the fingers. So goes it with my dragon design. Fantasy, to be done correctly must take its cues from reality to achieve its goals.

Many thanks for your compliments! Strong feedback like the ones you gave me really make my week! Take care.

Hi:

Thank you!

The last time I checked (about 2005) The Franklin Mint had reduced it's staff by 70%. Taking into consideration the feathernesting, vicious, self-serving politics and inter-departmental feuding that went on there before the recession, we should be fortunate that anything was produced at all, let alone anything of quality. All the rest of the prototype work (which is modelmaking for miniature cars and, therefore, easily done with computer graphics and stereo lithography) is now outsourced to China.

However, I have very fond memories of working under Ellen Cagguila, the Artists Relations Manager, for a Julie Bell collectible line of figurines. She was the finest manager an artist could have the honour of working for!

Thanks for stopping in and sharing your thoughts. Take care.

Hello, I really like your sculptures, but I'm just so curious, how do you get the dragon's wings and tail to stay like that, wouldn't it tople over?
I'm also doing sculpture (my first time) and I'm having trouble keeping things straight, they seem to just topple over (I'm using super sculpy and/or plasticine).

If you could give me a piece of advice or any help, I would be very very grateful.
Thank you very much, and keep it up! Amazing stuff there!

DaVinci41 In reply to CainKinris [2008-05-07 04:27:28 +0000 UTC]

Hi:

That dragon was my first shot at doing a winged creature. There was no supportive understructure for the wings, but the tail had a braided armature wire to hold it up. It was primarily held together with a little patience, a lot of love and a prayer!

The best advise I could give you is the same advise that I now follow: use K & S brand aluminum sheeting for the wing's understructure. K & S products are found at many well-stocked hobby supply stores in the states. If you can't obtain it in Australia, you'll probably be able to acquire this stuff online through their website.

I hope this information helped you. Take care and good luck!

Best Wishes,

Curt
