Description A commission for

He requested a traditional artwork of a brown wolf-character in Nelvana-style, residing at Redwall Abbey.
Having taken up the vows of peace and wearing the habit of a brother of Redwall, he finds himself struggling with his natural feral instincts to give into the urge to kill. This has manifested in the form of a demonic ghostly dark wolf in black leather jacket and gloves, wearing a military hat.
With the dark wolf-ghost acting as the "shoulder demon" appearing on the Monk's left, I added on to his idea. I envisioned the Spirit of Martin the Warrior as the good "shoulder angel" influence on his right, urging him to renounce the evil impulses and embrace the life of peace.

Drawn, coloured and inked using marker pens and pencils, the only digital work done on this artwork was to clean up mistakes, enhance the ghostly special effects and to re-type Martin's words (since my RL handwriting is awful, especially with a marker pen)

Martin the Warrior and Redwall was created by the late great Brian Jacques.

Every time I see this image I imagine Martin the Warrior saying his line here in the voice Ben Campbell gave his spirit in the cartoon.

Very powerful scene here, I can see the emotion on the wolf's face. Great work on capturing the struggle between peace and chaos here as well.

You did a great job on this!

Heh, thanks very much!
Even if he is an evil influence, he came out pretty well... that black pastel sure made an effective dark aura!
Too bad the white barely showed up for Martin and I had to use a little digital enhancement to make him look more ethereal and angelic...

You're welcome
No worries I do the same thing to my traditional arts
all the time. My scanner doesn't pick up the colors that much
my traditional art needs some help from Photoshop sometimes.
You still did a wonderful job!

Thanks! Photoshop sure is useful! I was just designing a cover for a book of Mum's, but it's going to need some cleanup. The waves need stronger white highlights, a rock I drew in needs to be enlarged and two characters in a boat got a little blurred by the permanent colour-markers running from the cheap hairspray I used to fix the pastels...

For him to be at peace, both his light and dark halves have to be united. The Yin and the Yang as one. Like here (9:37-12:29): www.youtube.com/watch?v=4EugQy…

Do you agree?

DCLeadboot In reply to Fail-Seeker [2018-04-08 00:13:37 +0000 UTC]

Sure is a complex path... could be that the wolf's true calling is to become a warrior on the side of Redwall... turning his ferocious side to battle his enemies, but in cooperation with his peaceful side for the greater good...

It is through balance that peace is obtained, do you agree?

👍: 0 ⏩: 1

DCLeadboot In reply to Fail-Seeker [2018-04-08 10:51:11 +0000 UTC]

Certainly justice should be tempered with mercy, and one should be humble in victory, so yeah... balance is good

👍: 0 ⏩: 1

Fail-Seeker In reply to DCLeadboot [2018-04-08 14:08:20 +0000 UTC]

One way to see it is...

While one cannot deny that rules and regulations are necessary to preserve peace; but as a bird whose wings are clipped cannot fly, those who subject themselves to a life under the iron fist of law would never enjoy the freedom of mind and the right to achieve their own hopes and dreams. While such a life of natural instinct would be quite alluring, overflowing with the excitement and exhilaration that naturally comes from such unfettered freedom; said freedom would also give birth to never-ending conflicts and competition, no one would be able to live in peace or contentment.

One must not attempt to pursue (or subject themselves to) either extreme; as in the end, it will only produce sorrow. It is only through balance that happiness is obtained. While difficult to achieve, it is important to strive for.

Make sense?

DCLeadboot In reply to Fail-Seeker [2018-04-08 17:29:20 +0000 UTC]

I guess how that makes sense to me is to consider what Jesus Christ had to deal with in His time on Earth.
The Jewish religious leaders of the day believed that to please God, they had to adhere to the very letter of the law, and to that end had made up their own rules to hedge themselves in with the law.
They condemned any sort of work as a violation of the Sabbath and sacrilegious!
For Jesus however, the needs of the people were more important than the silly rules of the Pharisees.
It cannot be unlawful to do good even on the Sabbath, therefore it was right for Him to bend unfair rules when the needs were greater.
"If you have a donkey that falls into a pit on the Sabbath, do you not pull it out?"

A great many people like him have lost their direction, wandering aimlessly amongst the rubble produced by the conflicts of that land. He must now use the newfound wisdom and understanding he gains to help Redwall Abbey guide them to a new future. It will not be easy and will require the blood, sweat, and tears of many to rebuild; but it is in this that the true glory of the future lies.

The future of the people shall be built by neither dependency on the divine or the demonic, but by the very hands of the people themselves.

DCLeadboot In reply to Fail-Seeker [2018-04-08 23:00:16 +0000 UTC]

All rather complex indeed, what humanity (or anthromanity, in the case of Redwall) has made of the world...

Personally, I still hold to my faith that the Lord will straighten everything out in the end, and evil will be vanquished forever. Jesus already conquered Death and atoned for our sins, so Satan is basically living on borrowed time

Fail-Seeker In reply to DCLeadboot [2018-04-09 02:47:07 +0000 UTC]

Still, the Lord would not want us to be entirely dependent on him; right?

We must all strive to find out own paths in life.

👍: 0 ⏩: 1

DCLeadboot In reply to Fail-Seeker [2018-04-09 12:23:15 +0000 UTC]

Well, we have our free will, certainly.
But also there are times when I have to depend on the Lord's help. Like when the situation is beyond my control... like when travelling, and I'm always nervous in case there's an accident... we pray for a safe journey.

Ultimately though, I mean to follow Jesus' example and do good, making something positive of this life... that's where my art and book projects come in.

ZwarionwanyMikotaj In reply to Fail-Seeker [2018-04-09 18:21:14 +0000 UTC]

In a way yes, I get the embracing both sides the good and the bad. Sure it achieves balance with law and freedom sure.

But the main focus here, is he's trying to decide what he wants, and if it's the right thing, or the wrong thing. He doesn't want to end up like Veil Sixclaw, at the same time, he wants to do great things for both the Abbey and the world. The Vermin considered him a Brother as much as the Redwall order itself. The fox Warlord even said to the wolf, that they were cousins.

What's going on here is he's trying to resist temptation to kill the Abbot, which is a Chaotic act, and he can do it by his own free will. But is it the right thing to do, to seize an opportunity so violently? Or is it better to resist and confront this horde somehow?
