Description
An excerpt from Brian Jacques' "Mattimeo: A Tale of Redwall"
Snatching the willow cane from Skinpaw, the Cruel One struck out, lashing Mattimeo several times. The cane snapped. Slagar stood shaking, breathing hard through the silken mask.
Mattimeo curled his lip defiantly. He had not even felt the blows. "Get yourself another cane and try harder, half-face!"
-------------------------------------------------------------------------------
This was how I imagined this scene from the story - though my style has somehow come full-circle to bear similarities to the style from the Nelvana cartoon adaptation, I'm not quite so reserved... I explicitly see Mattimeo beaten, without awkward cutaways because the animators were too squeamish to show any sort of violence... and I also see Mattimeo defying Slagar with more of the snarky determination that endeared me to the young mouse as the "warrior" within him began to develop and he put aside the "spoiled Redwall brat" that he started out as.
This was about the point of the story where I started to like Mattimeo!
Drawn traditional-style in pencils, ink pen and colour-markers.
Mattimeo and Slagar are Copyright © Brian Jacques.

I was making a joke about the insult Mattimeo was using. It wasn't directed towards you, it was directed towards Jacques' idea of having that be a line.

I think that line was more in the range of being a challenge, like the young mouse was starting to develop the warrior spirit and he was saying, "Try that again, of you dare... I'll show you REAL pain someday..."

Hello:
I was only able to watch the series once, and I indeed see how that series' animators (and maybe even the producers) were a bit reserved on showing too much violence, specially on younger characters, but those were those times I guess.

Hehe, yeah... heck, I've seen Secret of NIMH, so it's not like I haven't seen rodentine violence before... hence it kinda bugs me when the Nelvana Redwall steers away from showing it completely...

I have watched Secret of NIMH too, also the Watership Down movie, the first Land Before Time, and many others . As for steering away, I can imagine the same happened with the Watership Down animated series, but I've never watched that one X3 .
Ok, one thing is Nelvana Redwall steered away, 4Kids just... ehh... jkglkadgakdlkdalkdalkd... it was too much, lol . Also Yu-Gi-Oh! Abridged is awesme .

I saw the original Watership Down film - that certainly took a dark turn VERY fast...
But still, these old films did show us the dark side of life... we're a lot tougher than today's mollycoddled cotton-wool-wrapped generation who can't even see a mouse get his face slapped without freaking out!
"Don't move, or we'll shoot you with our invisible guns!"
(Because 4Kids censored them out)

Indeed it is!
Yeah, I read somewhere about kids having to be carried out of cinemas screaming in distress when Bambi's mother died... I was thinking, "What?! Really?!"
Because when I saw Bambi, having been introduced gradually to the concept of death and elderly relatives and friends having "gone to see Jesus", I was more accepting of the situation.
When the shot rang out and Bambi fled alone, I guessed what had happened. When the Great Prince informed Bambi that "Your mother can't be with you any more." I have expected him to add, "She is dead." but it wasn't said and didn't need to be said.
I never was one for getting emotional when I was little... I just accepted things calmly, I guess. I only seem to have loosened up since I've grown older, tearing up a bit (whether for sadness or joy or sheer exhilaration) for powerful movie soundtracks and certain scenes in games, movies or books (such as the sacrifice of Aslan, or the arrival of allies to the succour of Redwall, or the charge of the Rohirrim at the Pelennor Fields)
"Well, that was just weird. I should probably cut back on the drugs."

I've read about that too. In all honestly, I felt more sad when Littlefoot's mother died, but it passed soon . But I was indeed aware, back then, about death.... I suppose many kids weren't when they went to watch that movie.

Ah... was never into Game of Thrones...
Danbuster: What IS Game of Thrones, anyway? I thought it was a medieval quiz programme...
Frederick: All I know of it is that it has an awesome theme tune... but that's about all it has going for it. The rest is just gratituous sex, violence and bad language.
Spencer: Even Jenny an' me don't carry on like that!
Yeah, especially when she came out of the water like the T1000, with that ominous dark soundtrack...
Shadi: Shamasha shamash! (whatever that was he said) My name is Shadi, and in our land of Egypt, we no longer use slave to build pyramid. These days, we let women do it instead. Is'a nice! If you come with me, I was show you why I hang donuts from my ears.

Of course, this is fan-art from Brian Jacques' "Tales of Redwall" books - they were set in a sort of medieval stasis...
If you were to get to know my own original characters (Danbuster and co), you''ll see that they live in a contemporary period - Cribbs and Fred from my animations are known to the Dan Clan.

Even in Danbuster's world, they usually best for pulling the carts around (although since they're anthros too, they have handcarts instead of being tied between the shafts on reigns)

I gotta admit, Matti definitely has a ton of defiant spunk against that half-faced vermin in a jester mask. I could imagine how he was able to stand the pain of being lashed out with that cane. Although I wouldn't mind biting him back if I was Matti, whatever pain is inflicted on me, I do it back!
At least Slagar gets his deserts in the end. I wouldn't mind though having a new pelt.

DCLeadboot In reply to AlexRaccoonGlider [2018-06-11 08:42:43 +0000 UTC]
Heh, indeed! Matti certainly gave Slagar a good putting-down in that scene! Although he was hardly in a position to bite back with more than stinging words... in fact, it would probably have made things worse if he had. Slagar did have him and his friends in chains...
Yeah, Slagar certainly gets paid out in the end... even if falling down a well was probably too quick and easy an end for one who had caused so much suffering to others...

Indeed, unlike kiddy-animations these days, my imagination knows no censorship!
I could even show my interpretation of Stonefleck's death, blood and everything, unobscured by that big fat pesky tree - but the focus groups these days would probably put a Mature rating on it, because it would freak out any kid who hadn't seen Jenner dying in the same manner in Secret of NIMH!

Heh, I honestly don't understand why people get so upset over Stonefleck's death in the TV series. I had no problem with it; I thought the way how his hand reached out from behind the tree was creepy (but in a good, thematic/stylish sort of way).

DCLeadboot In reply to Kelaiah [2018-06-12 14:55:33 +0000 UTC]
Heh, maybe... but after seeing Maleficent and Jenner and suchlike get it onscreen, it's kind of more satisfying for me to see a villain taken out properly!
👍: 0 ⏩: 1
Kelaiah In reply to DCLeadboot [2018-06-13 00:19:01 +0000 UTC]
Hm, yeah, I guess that's true... but Stonefleck wasn't really a main villain, and he didn't really do much onscreen. So therefore, I don't feel jilted with his death scene. I did feel kinda jilted with Slagar's death scene, though. Not just in the TV show, but also in the book.
I'd have changed it so that he gets beheaded by Orlando the Ax - because why not? Both the book and the TV series started off with Orlando going after Slagar, why not end it with Orlando being the one to do the fox in? Brings everything full circle, more or less. Besides, Matthias got the credit for killing off Cluny the Scourge, he doesn't need the glory of killing Slagar as well.
👍: 0 ⏩: 1
DCLeadboot In reply to Kelaiah [2018-06-13 01:17:31 +0000 UTC]
Yeah, Orlando totally got jipped there...
Slagar caused all that pain and suffering to others, and in the end what does he get? A sharp drop down a deep dry well! Too quick and painless for that scum... ;;
At least if Mattimeo had flung his chains and lamed him, or Orlando snapped his spine like Brocktree did to Ungatt Trunn (one villain who actually deserved a less lingering death)
Heh, Matthias was supposed to have finished off Cluny... but I still have a fan-theory that Cluny survived (the bell only landed OVER him) and so remains a constant nuisance...
At least it gives Mattimeo something to do as a teenage Warrior-in-Training...
👍: 0 ⏩: 1
Kelaiah In reply to DCLeadboot [2018-06-15 05:47:17 +0000 UTC]
Yes. Though like I said, I would have had Orlando just ax-off Slagar's head. Although I do like the idea of Mattimeo laming him first with some chains. Matti would then get partial credit for offing his nemesis.
And yes, as evil as Ungatt Trunn was, his death seemed too harsh even for him. I'd have him be already dead when Groddil pushes his body out to sea.
As for your fan-theory, that is pretty cool... although again, the bell did have a clapper/dinger inside of it. It wasn't hollow. So there was still something to strike Cluny on its way down. ^^
Heh heh, although I'd have Cluny still be alive just so he can have a run-in with Slagar. Now *that'd* be cool!
👍: 0 ⏩: 1
DCLeadboot In reply to Kelaiah [2018-06-15 14:52:58 +0000 UTC]
Heh, well... I would have considered the idea of Matti laming Slagar with his chains some pretty poetic justice... considering how the Cruel One threatened runaways with doing just that with his bolas!
And indeed, Trunn deserved a more dignified fate, being a relatively sane and charismatic villain!
Wow, that would be an interesting encounter, Slagar vs Cluny...
👍: 0 ⏩: 1
Kelaiah In reply to DCLeadboot [2018-06-16 02:42:10 +0000 UTC]
Exactly. Plus it was thanks to Slagar that Matti wound up in chains in the first place, so there's more poetic justice there.
Yes. He did murder Groddil's family and enslaved/bullied/tortured Groddil for a good many seasons, so the fox at least does deserve to roll Trunn's dead body out to sea (symbolically freeing himself from Trunn's influence?). But having the wildcat still be alive for that... yeah. A bit much.
Who would win?

I believe in making the punishment fit the crime!
Yeah, guess Groddil needed his moment too... again, a bit of justice for him!
Probably Cluny? He certainly proved himself very difficult to kill more than once, while all that Slagar did was kidnap children, a trigger landslide trap and attack from the shadows... and when it came to facing his enemies, he just ran away and fell down a foxhole!
