An excerpt from Brian Jacques' "Mattimeo: A Tale of Redwall"
Snatching the willow cane from Skinpaw, the Cruel One struck out, lashing Mattimeo several times. The cane snapped. Slagar stood shaking, breathing hard through the silken mask.
Mattimeo curled his lip defiantly. He had not even felt the blows. "Get yourself another cane and try harder, half-face!"

This was how I imagined this scene from the story - though my style has somehow come full-circle to bear similarities to the style from the Nelvana cartoon adaptation, I'm not quite so reserved... I explicitly see Mattimeo beaten, without awkward cutaways because the animators were too squeamish to show any sort of violence... and I also see Mattimeo defying Slagar with more of the snarky determination that endeared me to the young mouse as the "warrior" within him began to develop and he put aside the "spoiled Redwall brat" that he started out as.
This was about the point of the story where I started to like Mattimeo!

Yeah, I thoughts those cuts were unnecessary. I mean we get to see Vitch abused by Slagar. If I was one of the producers, I would just have the animators animate Slagar swinging his willow cane, then cut to it snapping in two on Mattimeo’s head. Instead of those weird cuts back to back.

Ah, indeed... I mean, despite some similarity in styles, Nelvana's Redwall is no Don Bluth's Secret of Nimh!
At least Don wasn't afraid to show death onscreen...
I also felt cheated by Stonefleck's death in the cartoon, as we'd built up this sub-villain in the space of a few episodes, only for a fat tree to obscure the scene where Log-a-Log's thrown rapier impales him to death! There was no censorship in my imagination! The rat gets a sword in the back (just like Jenner in Nimh), gives an agonised grunt and slumps to the ground... possibly even blood coming from the mouth? But either way, the scene was so much more satisfying to see when not obscured!

The only death that wasn’t censored by a cutaway, offscreen, or by an object was Badrang’s death. Also I would have made the character’s motions more fluid, some scenes the characters’ movements were a bit robotic. Also I would have made sure the characters were constantly drawn. For instance, occassionally Jess would be depicted as a gray furred squirrel instead of a red one, during the scene in fifth Episode of Season 2, when the Abbey Dwellers are competing for Abbot Mordalfus’ cake, Rollo had either grown of Constance had shrunk. Also, the many out of character placements, like Foremole and Rollo in the Kingdom of Malkariss, and Constance watching Matthias and the rest getting eaten by the fish. Oh! And the numerous Log-a-Log clones.

At least Mattimeo and Martin the Warrior seem to have been better told than the first Redwall season, where instead of sticking to the plot and going with it, they treated it as episodal events and threw in filler-episodes with random circuses and such...

Yeah, Wild Ivy and Farlo served no purpose in the story of the first Season.

Indeed... and the episode where Warbeak swooped down to count the rats and got herself shot down and used as snake-bait to distract Matthias... that was pretty contrived Idiot Ball stupidity!
Warbeak from the book may have been young, but she was no fool.

Those cuts really bother me, it's an obvious attempt at censorship. They could have just shown the abuse and that scene would have been way better.

Heh, yeah... he certainly didn't know to react to Mattimeo's retort! The most he could do was to tell his subordinates make the young mouse march in front, so he wouldn't have to feel his eyes burning into his back!
