Description
One more traditional artwork for the interim.Mattimeo, son of Matthias & Cornflower, as he would appear as a fully-mature young mouse.
Having come of age, Matthias announces his retirement and passes the Sword of Martin down to his son and names him the next Champion of Redwall.
In terms of recent fanfic RP-collabs with ~sailex , Mattimeo has done much to earn this position by now, as his developing powers of leadership, fighting ability and general heroic features have had plenty of chances to be practised.
He's still a mischievous young male with a snarky sense of humour, but he's long-since put the spoilt irresponsible Abbey-brat behind him, and looks ahead with a strong sense of commitment towards Redwall Abbey and the friends that he lives with there.

Neat, his weapon reminds me Italian short sword named Cinquedea [link]

Thanks! Though I tend to think of the Sword of Martin as a sort of mouse-size broadsword? For mice, it's a big two-pawed beast of a blade - for squirrels or hares, more of a standard-sized longsword - for otters and badgers, a small dirk!

It's all a matter of size, same was in "Hobbit" by J.R.R. Tolkien ( remember the knife Bilbo got from the trolls ? The monsters used it as dirk, for Bilbo it was a short sword ) and Dungeons & Dragons follow those rules - smaller beings have difficulties in wielding weapons designed for larger user; for example, a halfing ( hobbit in D&D ) gets penalties to attack and hit tests when using weapons designed for humans.

Heh, heh... makes sense in context!
Of course, Martin's sword was made for a mouse to use comfortably - Mr Jacques never really established a definite scale between species, so I just had to assume it was big but light enough to wield.
Brian Jacques perhaps had it wrong, saying that any sword was really heavy. I could understand it with a guy like Lord Brocktree, whose double-hilted broadsword was almost as big as himself, but real swords usually were made to be weight-efficient, weren't they?

Very nice artwork of Mattimeo.
I consider Mattimeo my second favourite season of the Redwall TV series after Martin the Warrior.

Thanks!
Yup, along with Martin the Warrior, Gonff, Basil and... heck of a lot of others... Mattimeo is certainly way up there on my approval ratings!
At least, when he matured and put the brat behind him... I liked him better as he developed.

Yes, I definitely like Mattimeo better when he matured. I also liked Matthias's clothing and voice better in Mattimeo than in Redwall.
(the first one)
Are you referring to the Great Mouse Detectives when mentioning Basil? If so, I love the Great Mouse Detectives. Great movie and I think it is one of the most underrated movies so far in a good way.

I like Matthias' more casual wear in the second series, too - and the more mature teenage voice. There's a lot more personality on both counts. An individual costume and a better voice.
His younger voice sounded a bit too "whiny brat" to me...
As we were on the subject of Redwall, I was referring to Basil Stag Hare - love that wacky old fellow!
But yeah, I like Basil the Great Mouse Detective too. It's underrated.

Oh...Well, I do like Basil Stag Hare especially when he is eating. (That was a reference to I think episode 1 of Mattimeo.)

One of my best renditions anyway - though come to that, I haven't seen a lot of Mattimeo artwork...

Seems that everyone generally just copies publicity art from Nelvana or book illustrations... there are few truly original renditions...

Yeah, it's like... would it kill them to try and draw their own version, instead of just copying?
Personally, that's something I would have done in early days, but nowadays I aim to be original.

Ah yeah I remember Mattimeo from the second season of the Animation where he gets kidnapped by a masked fox & Matthias has to go save him. I like how he weilds a sword simmilar to that of Sting and doing a 'by the power of Greyskull' pose.
Great job mate.

Heh, heh... thanks, mate!
I guess there was a certain He-Man/Thundercats influence there, even if I never really watched those shows... except, of course, there's nothing ambiguously gay about Mattimeo! He marries Tess Churchmouse and has a son of his own, after all!
Yup, I liked the Mattimeo TV series better than the first Redwall one - it stuck a lot more to the book and it had Tim Curry as Slagar! That's two major bonuses for the price of one!

I wonder if hedgehogs really do that, universally... or was Brian Jacques or the animator influenced by Sonic but too ashamed to admit it? (Considering Jacques was supposed to have abhorred videogames)
Possibly a distant relative though, yeah...
