I find this helpful! I'm trying to draw a guy in a cape.

Well, this is useful information for any aspiring superhero artist, though it does raise the question of "why wear a cape in the first place?"

'Cause they're cool! Other than that, I have no idea Batman (and various other people in the Bat-clan) uses it to hide and terrify his enemies. That's the only cape I can think of that has any sort of practical use. I agree.

Good answer.
Historically, they were worn for warmth and (some) protection from the weather, from the time of ancient Rome to the early 19th century U.S.
Andrew Jackson wore a cape which helped save him once. Someone shot at him from behind, but since his cape obscured the shape of his upper torso, the shooter narrowly missed him, merely putting a hole through the garment. Perhaps Batman is aided in the same way.
And yes, they are cool. Even Vader wore one.

Oh wow. Capes are awesome then. (Well, more awesome than they already were.) The fact that Vader wore one made it even more awesome, I can't imagine him without a cape. It seems incomplete. Capes are just awesome in their own right. Common knowledge, yeah? If only capes/cloaks were accepted in society for everyday use. I would wear one.

So... In that reply you basically answered your own (probably rhetorical) question. Good work.
